Job Summary:
Under general supervision, performs Senior Roll Grinder duties. Remove material and finish rolls and knives by turning and grinding operations, utilizing machines and equipment suitable and available for this purpose including but not limited to grinders and lathes. Must perform all duties with a high degree of proficiency. Must perform specific responsibilities as instructed or requested by supervision. Must meet specific performance standards to complete assigned tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Keep work area, tools and equipment clean and orderly.
  • Transferring and placing of rolls on the grinding machine.
  • Off-loading and loading Rolls onto Transport Trucks.
  • Mark each roll to identify the mill or caster from which it was obtained.
  • Set up the grinding machine for each operation by centering the roll in place on the machine, determining the size of steady rest needed and making its installation, leveling the roll in the machine, and making other adjustments as indicated by instruments and gauges on the roll grinder machine.
  • Set the machine to produce the desired crown.
  • Prepare and ascertain that the proper coolants are in the machine and are functioning.
  • Examine the rolls and determine the amount of cut needed as indicated by the degree of toughness of the roll.
  • Select the proper grit wheel or cutting tools needed to perform the cut and finish and the phases of operation.
  • Maintain a close observation during operation for any malfunction or performance.
  • Make adjustment in carriage speed, wheel speed, head speed, tarry, overheating, etc. to eliminate feed lines, chatter, ripples, or other undesirable performance on the roll.
  • Produce high quality rolls of consistent specified finish in times considered reasonable for the particular roll and finish.
  • Use micrometer, gauges, and other instruments to ascertain that the

proper crown and finish are obtained on the rolls.

  • Wipe rolls clean, apply rust preventive, and wrap the rolls at

completion of each operation to protect the finished surface.

  • Establish and maintain record of roll number, maker of roll,

composition of roll, weight, size, time in mill, reduction of metal on
roll, grit wheels used, and any malfunction on rolls or to the
equipment.

  • Finish rolls requiring special or ultra-high finishes.
  • Perform routine maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as instructed or requested.
  • Chocking/Locking and Un-chocking of Rolls of various sizes.

Performance Standards:
a). Perform assigned Senior Roll Grinder duties according to Maintenance
Department practices. Due to the wide range of responsibilities for
this position, the department
supervisor or Superintendent will make judgment decisions based on
their knowledge of tasks needing to be performed.
b). Ensure daily tasks are completed in time allotted.
c). Ensure daily tasks are performed in compliance with established
practices.
d). Ensure safety rules are followed.
e). Follow established guidelines in relation to attendance, breaks, on
call responsibilities, and company policy.
f). Report machinery, safety, or personnel issues to supervisor.
g). Determine nature of machinery malfunction or breakdown. Advise
supervisor to
arrange repairs as necessary.
h). Recognize safety hazards or unsafe activities of other personnel.
Report such
to offending associate and supervisor for review during scheduled
safety talk.
i). Recognize misuse, theft or damage of company property and report
such to
supervisor.
j). Support and participate in open communication between supervision
and fellow
employees.
k). Secure necessary supplies to perform assigned duties.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
Certificate from a secondary technical or vocational school; or three to six
months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination
of education and experience.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence,
and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively
present information in one-on-one and small group situations to
customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Computer and other Skills:
Ability to acquire basic computer skills to enter and extract information
from computer. Ability to use measuring equipment such as micrometer
and tape.
Technical Skills:
Working knowledge of metal hardness, functioning of all types of grit
grinding wheels and cutting tools, the reactions of heat and metal and
other basic grinding principles.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using
whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate,
ratio, and percent and to interpret graphic representations.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Working knowledge of
problem-solving skills and ability to apply them in a reasonable manner.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required
to stand; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this
job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed
to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and
high heat.

is not limited to safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, long sleeve shirts and
