About the Utah Olympic Oval

Built in 2001 for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the Utah Olympic Oval houses Utah’s only 400-meter speed skating oval, two international sized ice sheets, and a state-of-the-art four lane 442-meter running track. Today, it is a dynamic multi-use facility focused on developing and growing participation in ice sports in Utah. About the role

As the Speed Skating Timing Deck and Events Coordinator, you will work with the General Manager and Sport management staff and assist in the duties of planning, coordinating and organizing specific event technical volunteers for the purpose of hosting world class speed skating events and facilitate sport events and the facility schedule.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Deliver precise, on-time results for every Utah Olympic Oval speed-skating race.
    • Apply current event-results policies and procedures at each competition.
    • Manage, maintain, certify, and calibrate the electronic timing system while meeting its annual maintenance budget.
    • Create pairings lists and race schedules; communicate them to coaches and operations staff.
    • Track race-result data, file world-record paperwork, and distribute results per post-event protocol.
  • Build and lead a high-performing technical-volunteer workforce.
    • Develop and implement procedures for coordinating volunteer support and chain of command.
    • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteers and new staff for national and international events.
    • Communicate regularly through meetings and e-mails to reinforce policies and address improvement areas.
    • Grow the Oval speed-skating technical volunteer program.
  • Protect participants by enforcing safety and competition standards.
    • Implement and monitor safety protocols for all employees and volunteers during events.
    • Keep ISU/USS standards current and brief staff on any rule or protocol changes.
    • Stay current with the ISU competition calendar and sanctioning timeline to ensure compliance.
  • Drive strategic planning and cross-department collaboration for event success.
    • Assist event-management staff with short- and long-term goals for speed-skating events.
    • Coordinate necessary services with Oval staff and management; attend organizing-committee meetings as required.
  • Maintain comprehensive, accurate records and documentation each season.
    • Organize annual event files, timing-device certifications, and race-result archives.
    • Submit all required forms, certifications, and calibrations promptly and accurately.
  • Complete all required in-house training.
  • All other job responsibilities as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Essential Skills

  • Computer proficient (Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Proficient in Finish Lynx, Wige and race related event related race software
  • Detail oriented with proven organizational skills
  • Experience successfully managing internal and external relationships
  • Self-starter attitude.  Ability to work with little supervision once general direction has been given
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently
  • Must be able to consistently meet deadlines and demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness
  • Ice arena knowledge preferable
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Ability to function as a team player.
  • Strong planning and problem-solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college university with a degree in sports recreation or other closely related field – or a combination of education and/or relevant experience totalling four years.
  • Speedskating or Speedskating Events background.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Flexible work schedule – may need to work late and weekend hours.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing - to converse with others in a normal conversation.
  • Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking, pushing, reaching above shoulders, and sitting.
