POSITION: Refuse Collector Driver Senior

SALARY: $25.63 - $29.71

REPORTS TO: Public Works Director

LOCATION: Public Works/Solid Waste, Nespelem, Washington

Basic Functions:  This is a non-exempt position. Drives and performs manual work in the collection, transport, and deposition of solid waste.   Drives a specialized heavy truck with standard and automated loading capacity or other vehicle used in collecting garbage, refuse, and recyclables.  Trains and observes drivers for proper operations and safe work habits and performs advanced troubleshooting on equipment.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: 

  • The position may require a high school diploma or GED and four years of prior experience operating light to medium duty trucks and banding equipment, two years that would be operating refuse collection trucks.
  • Requires a Class A commercial driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance.  Maintain license and eligibility throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • The position requires in-depth working knowledge of the practices used in the operation of a refuse collection truck and hydraulic equipment including two/three axle trucks with hydraulic lift capacity, knuckle boom truck, and compacting and banding equipment. 
  • Requires knowledge of Tribal, State and City traffic regulations and the geography and street systems. 
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions sufficient to train and reinforce standards. 
  • Requires knowledge of and skill at performing basic inspections, maintenance and servicing trucks. 
  • Requires knowledge of city ordinances and other regulations regarding solid waste collection and disposal. 
  • Requires sufficient math skills to record quantities, weights, and other numeric to document work activity. 
  • Requires sufficient language skills to write and convey daily operations information to supervisors. 
  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to work cooperatively with peers and project a positive image of the department to commercial and residential customers.
  • Requires the ability to carry out the objectives of the position and understand all work-related instructions. 
  • Requires the ability to follow specified routes when collecting refuse. 
  • Requires the ability to comply with work schedules that can vary and include weekends and holidays. 
  • Requires the ability to train other  drivers to observe safe work practices and be alert to co-workers habits. 
  • Requires the ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical problems associated with trucks and equipment. 
  • Requires the ability to work with follow employees and the public. 
  • Requires the ability to work with and around unpleasant waste materials.
  • This position performs work of an active and strenuous requiring the ability to stand, walk, sit, push, lift, dig, haul, pull, reach, grasp, carry, squat or stoop, bend and twist the body while performing normal duties.
  • Requires hand, eye, arm and finger effort and coordination to operate controls and use tools. 
  • Requires sufficient strength to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis without labor saving devices. 
  • Requires visual and auditory acuity to view moving objects such as in traffic and hear sounds and equipment prompts. 
  • Requires sufficient auditory ability to project voice over machinery noises.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance.  In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances.  If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
