Position Summary

The Development Manager plays a key leadership role in advancing reStart Inc.’s fundraising strategy by overseeing mid-level and general donor engagement, managing volunteer coordination, and leading the grants management process. This position ensures that development operations are efficient, strategic, and aligned with organizational goals.

The Development Manager supervises a small team, supports cross-departmental collaboration, and works closely with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to strengthen donor cultivation, expand stewardship systems, and streamline revenue-generating processes. This role requires a highly organized, process-driven professional with strong communication and leadership skills, and a commitment to reStart’s mission to end homelessness with dignity and compassion.

Key Responsibilities

Grants Management & Strategy

  • Oversee the complete grants lifecycle—from prospect research and prioritization through submission, award management, and post-award reporting.
  • Supervise the Grants Writer, providing clear expectations, guidance, and ongoing performance support.
  • Develop and maintain grants standard operating procedures, templates, and internal workflows.
  • Partner with the CDO to identify, vet, and prioritize high-value institutional funders.
  • Manage and optimize Instrumental for grant prospecting, tracking, and reporting.
  • Coordinate with Finance and Program teams to ensure accurate budgets, outcomes, and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure timely submission of proposals, renewals, reports, and grant-related stewardship materials.
  • Track and communicate grant outcomes to internal stakeholders, contributing to data-driven decision-making.

Donor & Volunteer Engagement

  • Supervise the Volunteer & Donor Engagement Coordinator to ensure alignment between volunteerism and development strategies.
  • Strengthen donor engagement pipelines by integrating volunteer activities with stewardship outreach.
  • Oversee the monthly donor portfolio, ensuring consistent stewardship practices and retention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate donor records in Bloomerang and oversee data quality for donor engagement KPIs.
  • Support the CDO with mid-level donor meetings, proposal preparation, and personalized stewardship.
  • Contribute to donor communications and engagement efforts in collaboration with the Development & Communications team.

Team Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Supervise, mentor, and support the professional development of the Grants Writer and Volunteer & Donor Engagement Coordinator.
  • Establish clear performance expectations, accountability structures, and workflow documentation.
  • Evaluate and refine development systems, processes, and tools to increase efficiency and impact.
  • Provide regular updates, dashboards, and outcome reports for leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Contribute to departmental planning, annual goal setting, and long-term fundraising strategies.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, grant management, or donor stewardship.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing grants, preparing proposals, and coordinating cross-departmental workflows.
  • Strong understanding of donor engagement, volunteer coordination, and CRM systems (Bloomerang preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, digital communication platforms, and donor management tools.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
