Bullis School seeks an Upper School Latin Teacher to contribute to our vibrant learning community starting in the 2025-26 academic year. As a member of the Upper School team, candidates should be interested in teaching a range of Latin courses from introductory through AP. This is a 10-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position reporting to the Chair of the World Language Department and Head of Upper School. The assignment includes teaching five classes, as well as leading co-curricular activities, including advising eight to twelve students. Additional opportunities to supervise after-school activities are based on need and interest. 

 

The Bullis World Languages program emphasizes acquisition, teaching toward proficiency, and assessing performance using Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs). Guided by the theory and principles of Comprehensible Input (CI), teachers build lessons that engage and challenge students as they grow toward an ability to function in the target language. Teachers employ their creativity to form interdisciplinary, cultural, and personal connections by incorporating a variety of media, such as novellas and blogs, in the target language. Bullis students have opportunities to learn Spanish beginning in Lower School and Chinese, French, and Latin beginning in Middle School.

Duties & Qualifications

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for teaching five classes per academic year
  • Co-curricular activities, including student advising, as assigned by division principal 
  • Ability to teach several levels concurrently, from Latin I to Latin IV levels
  • Apply a holistic approach to achieving an inclusive environment where differences are valued and respected 
  • Use technology to blend learning and engage students in active, experiential, and hands-on learning
  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the basic instructional philosophy
  • Create a positive environment for students to learn effectively
  • Attend Upper School division and Foreign Language department meetings
  • Committed to staying up to date on current pedagogical practices and field-related trends
  • Communicate with parents, school counselors and administrators on students’ progress, as needed and appropriate
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standard and provide timely feedback and grades to students
  • Ability to use the student learning management system to provide feedback, grades, and assignments to students

 

Other Duties

  • Other tasks as assigned by the World Languages Department Chair and/or Head of Upper School 

  • Continued professional development endeavors

Education and Experience

 

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Classics, Classical Languages or related field

  • Minimum of two years prior teaching experience 

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Classics, Classical Languages or related field
  • Direct experience with Classical culture is highly desirable
  • Experience with Integrated Performance Assessments is highly desirable
  •  Proficiency with Windows and Apple OS, Microsoft Office, cloud computing (Google Docs, etc.), and other productivity and media software

 

Compensation and benefits are competitive, with an anticipated annual salary range of $65,000 to $ 95,000
