Position Summary:     

The Welding Inspector is responsible for assuring the proper welding and radio-graphic procedures are qualified and utilized.  The Welding Inspector is also responsible for ensuring the radiographers are certified, welders are qualified, and sound welds are produced.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs work in accordance with the appropriate Company specifications and approved construction drawings.
  • Verifies all materials used in the installation are in compliance with Company requirements.
  • Assures welding procedure is established and each welder is qualified for performing such work.
  • Observes the X-ray procedure (including developing and handling) being used to assure it is appropriate for the applications and the procedure is producing acceptable radio-graphs.
  • Observes welding technique and radio-graphic procedure to assure proper procedures are being followed.
  • Assures repairs are made in accordance with all appropriate codes and Company specifications.
  • Assures all welding materials used are in accordance with Company Welding Procedure, and have been stored according to manufacturer’s specifications.

Other Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:

  • Assures the Radiographer’s certifications are current and in accordance with SNT-TC-1A.
  • Coordinates radio-graphic crew’s activities with those of the contractor.
  • Appraises performance and accuracy of the contractor’s crew.
  • Determines equipment and tools to be used for the project.
  • Assures any design changes or material substitutions are approved by company executives.
  • Performs all other duties assigned.

Experience & Education Requirements:

  • Minimum Experience Requirement – two (2) years general pipeline experience with emphasis in welding or pipeline construction methods.
  • Minimum Education Requirements – High school degree or equivalent is required.
  • Possesses special knowledge of radio-graphic inspection of groove and fillet welds.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements applicable to welding as set forth in the OSHA Construction Industry Standards.
  • Knowledge of Qualified Welding procedures.
  • Inspector should be familiar with Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) rules and regulations.
  • Minimum Education Requirement – High school diploma or GED required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent use of analytical skills for assessing and evaluating.
  • Frequent concentration for prolonged periods of time to carry out inspection activities. 
  • Frequent evaluation of welds and pictures to determine quality.
  • Frequent movement around project site and on uneven terrain.
  • Occasional squatting/stooping to inspect work. 
  • Occasional lifting and the ability to carry up to thirty (30) pounds. If object is over thirty (30) pounds, individual is required to request assistance while lifting.
  • Frequent use of transportation to travel to the work site. 
  • Frequents use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to safely execute the job.
