Position Summary:
This is an as-needed position. Conducts routine tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Medical Laboratory Scientists should only perform those tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and that are within the individual's skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
The staffing of the Summit Medical Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
- Maintains records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Follows the laboratory's policies, including taking and documenting corrective actions, whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or test results reporting and correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- If required by route of qualification, performing high complexity testing only under the on-site direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services.
- Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
- Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.
- Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors, and other center employees.
- Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and the Center's business. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
