SUMMARY

The CMM Operator (Quality Technician) is responsible for verifying the conformance of manufactured and assembled parts using coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and other precision inspection tools. This role ensures products meet engineering specifications, quality standards, and customer requirements. The position involves interpreting complex technical drawings and models, generating inspection reports, assisting in root cause investigations, and effectively communicating with internal teams and external auditors or customers as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Interpret engineering requirements using 2D drawings, Catia, and other 3D models to determine part conformance.
  • Operate CMM and other digital and manual inspection equipment to inspect parts and assemblies.
  • Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections; complete First Article Inspections (FAI) and related documentation.
  • Inspect parts to ensure compliance with appearance, function, tolerances, dimensions, and specifications.
  • Generate and maintain accurate inspection reports and quality documentation.
  • Support Quality Engineers in Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations and provide feedback to Engineering on design or process issues.
  • Interpret and conform to new model engineering changes, providing feedback as required.
  • Communicate with FAA representatives, external auditors, and customers when necessary.
  • Assist with internal audits and compliance to quality procedures and standards.
  • Maintain certifications or qualifications appropriate to assigned inspection areas.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  •   Proficiency in CMM software, including but not limited to:

 

    • PC-DMIS
    • Calypso
    • MODUS
    • PolyWorks
    • Verisurf
    • MCOSMOS
 
  • Knowledge of aerospace quality standards (AS9100, ISO 9001) and engineering specifications.
  • Familiarity with Catia and other CAD systems.
  • Basic understanding of functional testing requirements and general manufacturing processes.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–3 years of experience operating CMM in a manufacturing environment; aerospace or precision machining experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge and experience with technical drawings, specifications, and basic math.
  • Associate degree in a technical field preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite preferred.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primarily works in a climate-controlled inspection or manufacturing facility.
  • May be exposed to noise, dust, and moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequent interaction with production, engineering, and quality teams.
  • May require occasional communication with external auditors and customers.

 

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • If a Security Clearance is required:
    • Candidates "must/may need" to be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance
    • Successful candidates must be able to secure Program Access approval
