Summary and Qualifications

Nutrition Specialist Job Summary:

The WIC Nutrition Specialist (NS) will provide services to caregivers, woman, infants and children. The Nutrition Specialist will provide nutrition education and breastfeeding support to WIC clients. We are looking to fill two Nutrition Specialist roles. 

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor degree in nutrition sciences, dietary sciences or related health discipline and/or Dietary Technician or Registered Dietitian
  • Preferred to have 1-year WIC experience
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to and from designated WIC locations
  • Bi-lingual, Arabic speaking is a plus

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge to provide up-to-date and accurate nutrition education and breastfeeding support to clients.
  • Complete nutrition assessments, determine eligibility of WIC clients and update MI WIC records
  • Complete individual nutrition education with clients at necessary appointments 
  • Provide culturally competent care to WIC clients
  • Must comply with HIPAA guidelines when working with WIC clients 
  • Assist the Customer Service Representatives in times of staff absence and keep up to date on the CSR roles
  • Promote breastfeeding with clients and provide clients with breast pumps and document issuance in the MI-WIC system
  • Perform anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin testing on adult and child clients 
  • Perform lead testing on children and provide education to caregivers regarding lead poisoning
  • Make appropriate client referrals to ancillary health care providers and social services and document in the MI-WIC system
  • Schedule clients into our Infant Feeding Classes and Breastfeeding Clubs as appropriate
  • Work with breastfeeding peer to provide pregnant moms breastfeeding education in clinic and via phone
  • Work with breastfeeding peers to provide partial and exclusive breastfeeding moms ongoing breastfeeding support
  • Complete quality assurance reports in a timely manner
  • Participate in staff trainings, conferences and staff meetings
  • Perform any other assigned duties or tasks as deemed necessary by the Supervisor
