Description

Provides field response coverage for the Animal Protection Unit (APU) and assists in investigating complaints of animal cruelty as well as assisting with first response to any natural disasters in Georgia.  This position will establish contacts with Law Enforcement and Animal Control agencies in their assigned counties. In any counties that are absent of animal control, contacts will be made with the county Sheriff’s office.  The Humane Investigator must reside in Southern Georgia or be willing to relocate to Southern Georgia.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Be a resource to state and local jurisdictions to assist on all aspects of an animal cruelty investigation
  • Be a resource to state and local jurisdictions to assist on natural disasters in Georgia
  • Be able to deploy on cruelty or disaster related operations at a moment’s notice. This includes overnight and multiple day events
  • Respond to requests for animal expertise assistance from municipal organizations or other animal welfare groups
  • Maintain all pertinent records of each case assigned
  • Be knowledgeable of GA state law pertaining to:
  • Animal Cruelty-State and Local
  • Dog Fighting
  • Animal seizure
  • Owner surrender
  • Cost of Care
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement, state agencies, community organizations, special interest groups or individuals, to provide services information and develop cooperation
  • Testify in court, as needed, for cases
  • Make appropriate decisions regarding supplies and equipment
  • Represents Atlanta Humane Society at various meetings and conferences
  • Attend Bi-monthly coalition meetings to relationship build between the groups but also discuss trends, challenges and exchange information
  • When appropriate, develop and lead an additional coalition comprised of Law Enforcement, Animal control agencies, Animal Welfare groups, and legal representatives in other regions of the state
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with both coworkers and other organizational staff
  • At ALL times, treat animals humanely and with respect and care
  • At ALL times, maintain a positive and professional public image
  • Educate the community about humane care and the mission of Atlanta Humane Society

Qualifications

  • Must reside in Southeast Georgia or be willing to move to that region
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 5 years animal control experience or comparable experience
  • Law Enforcement and/or military experience a plus
  • Must be able to drive a truck and safely haul a trailer-with or without animals
  • Must have a valid GA Driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Customer Service driven
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches
  • Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 50lbs, with reasonable accommodations
