Gallery Teacher

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager of K-12 Learning, our part-time Gallery Teachers will be key contributors to the Education Department as they serve participants in the museum’s tour pK-12 tour program. Gallery teacher- led tours are focused on student participation, creativity, and hands-on learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as gallery teacher during interactive tours through the galleries for pK-12th grade audiences.
  • Tours include hands-on projects and interpretive activities completed in the galleries.
  • Assist visitors in hands-on studio spaces.
  • Participate in training on the museum’s collection, special exhibitions, classroom management, museum best practices and other relevant topics.
  • Assists in data collection related to tour audiences.
  • Help maintain collection of tour supplies, inventory, and storage spaces.
  • Participates in reflection and evaluation of tour program.
  • Assists department team members with non-tour events as needed (classes, family events, public engagement, outreach. 
  • Undertake other assignments as requested.

  1. Frequently walking and standing for much of the day, walking across uneven terrain, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and occasionally sitting, climbing, balancing and smelling with a moderate noise level.
  2. Events and programs may require standing for extended periods of time, walking, speaking, and hearing in noisy environments.
  3. Desk work requires sitting for extended periods of time, carrying, handling, fingering, talking, and hearing, eye/hand coordination, repetitive motions.
  4. Visual demands may require near acuity, depth perception, and being able to clearly see computer monitors, tablets, etc.
  5. Strength sufficient to exert force up to 50 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects.
  6. Work areas are primarily indoors, in a climate-controlled environment. However, the team member occasionally may be subject to outside weather conditions while performing exterior patrols.
  7. Team members may be subject to many interruptions, pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, meeting deadlines and working evening and weekend events.
  8. Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  9. Must be physically able to drive and possess a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

The work hour availability for this position is approximately 13 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 1 pm. Some evening or weekend availability will be infrequently required.

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2+ years’ experience working with children in a student teaching, day care, summer camp or educational setting required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in art and education.
  • Strong public speaking skills required.
  • Excellent rapport with children.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated creativity, energy, and enthusiasm.
