SPECIAL SKILLS / REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 16 years of age for the youth track and 18 years of age for the adult track.
- Prior Diesel Technician or mechanical experience is not required.
- Must have the ability to use tools and equipment of the trade and preventative maintenance inspection methods.
- Must be willing to invest in core mechanic tools, to perform your job functions.
- Must be able to learn to inspect and analyze defects in equipment and use a variety of computers and tools with skill. Must be able to document and enter computer work records.
- Must have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, read orders and work instructions, and make accurate entries in the daily log.
- Must be able to follow posted safety rules and safe operating procedures to ensure proper techniques, such as lifting, are performed in the manner as which is described.
- Ability and willingness to work all scheduled hours, including overtime.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and maintain balance for extensive periods of time.
- Ability to frequently lift up to 50 lbs from 0” to 36” and carry objects up to 50 feet. Occasionally lift up to 80 lbs.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl frequently to work on vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to frequently twist, push, and pull from a variety of positions to work on equipment. Ability to frequently grip and grasp mechanic tools and parts. Manipulative skills and dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools.
- Ability to frequently climb to get in vehicles, on a step ladder to reach the engine compartment and stairs. The ability to climb and work up to 15” above ground may be required.
- Ability to reach frequently overhead as well as horizontally while laying on back.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental working conditions vary and trainees may encounter vibration, noise, odors, and extremes in temperature and wind as well as exposure to varied weather, varied surfaces, sharp edges, varied lighting and confined and congested areas, and occasional exposure to petroleum-based products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and grease, detergent cleaning solutions, dust, fumes, and chemicals.
