JOB DESCRIPTION  

Summary/ Objective  

East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.  ESH’s Workforce Development programs align with our mission by providing high quality youth and adult programs and services within community centers.    

The Workforce Development Divisions consisting of Jobs Plus (JP), Post-Secondary Pathways Program (PSP), Home Delivered Meals (HDM), Harvest to Haven and all workforce related Programming at ESH. Featuring training, education, career advancement services, financial empowerment services and community building programming, employment exploration and placement.  

The Instructor will work under the supervision of the Adult Literacy Education Manager to organize, schedule and instruct in Adult Basic Skills including GED preparation, job readiness PSP Academy, and sector-based trainings to certify participants. These services will complement and directly feed into workforce development and career advancement services provided throughout the organization.  

  

Essential Functions:  

Under the supervision of the Adult Literacy Education Manager and Senior Director of PSP, the Instructor will be responsible for but not limited to the following:  

  • Integrate GED services into broader career and educational goals of students. 

  • Implement and expand on GED material for pre-HSE and HSE prep, incorporating students’ relevant interests and learning needs.

  • Conduct needs assessment analysis for each participant; Provide student feedback and support; devise individualized instructional plans for students.   

  • Prescribes from individual employability plans and contributes to monthly evaluations of progress in program, makes recommendations and/or adaptation for program adjustment.

  • Initiate and participate in case conferencing management to assist members achieve career and education goals.

  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis; Maintain records portfolios and student progress reports

  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team, providing onsite services; Coordinate program activities with other program and overall departmental staff to promote the most effective instructional program goals

  • Be willing to become licensed in area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify participants.

  • Participate in collaborative efforts towards achieving goals as set forth in the Years 1-3 Performance-Based Milestones Chart (subject to change)  

  • Participate in relevant departmental meetings, trainings, case conferences, workshops and events.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, presentation, and leadership skills. Demonstrated initiative, creativity, flexibility, and follow-through
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs

 

Expected Work Schedule 

This role is a full-time position (35 hours a week. The program operates Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM  or 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with flexibility.  Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH's needs.

 

Required Clearances

COVID Vaccine – As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date.

 

Supervisory Responsibility 

None. 

 

Work Environment

Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

Travel

Minimal expected for this position, within the ESH network of programs/sites.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to successfully perform this job's essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role is generally a sedentary role; however, some sorting/filing is required. Requirements include the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
