PRIMARY PURPOSE OF JOB

The Commercial Loan Officer I position is responsible for soliciting, negotiating, underwriting and coordinating the closing of primarily basic commercial extensions of credit to establish their customer portfolio; and for adhering to lending policies designed to meet the banks overall goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PERFORMANCE AREAS - Other duties may be assigned

  • Engages in business development activities and solicitation of new business; actively involved in instilling and maintaining a positive sales environment by developing a list of active prospects.
  • Develops a relationship with potential and current customers; interviewing customers to obtain information needed to make credit decision; establishing proper identification of new customers.
  • Presents MA Banks product line up to customers in person and over the phone or online; listening to customers needs to help determine the best fit for the customer; cross-selling where appropriate by applying professional sales techniques
  • Analyzes of applicant financial status, credit and property evaluations to determine credit worthiness.
  • Gathers and analyzes of all information necessary to present a financing request to Senior Management or Loan Committee for approval; meets with existing or potential customers; visiting sites of loans; negotiates loan terms and conditions; approves loans within established lending limits or refers and recommends acceptance to the appropriate lending authority.
  • Collaborates with Loan Processing Manager to ensure coordination of processing of approved loans with Loan Processors and Loan Administration Specialist; ensuring loans are processed according to agreement, customer needs and conform to Bank lending policies; obtaining sufficient information and/or documentation from customers; solving problems relative to processing and servicing of loans within his or her portfolio; approving loan disbursements in accordance with agreements.
  • Ensures that credit inquires and UCC filings are researched to determine credit worthiness and appropriate collateral positioning are achieved; ensuring that certification or deletion of collateral is made by the appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares and signs documents for the lending area as needed (commitment, engagement, action and decline, letters, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of financial industry, economy, market conditions, rates, vendors and competition.
  • Reviews daily NSF and overdraft reports for their customers.
  • Approves or declines overdraft exceptions within established lending limits.
  • Monitors loan account ratings for individual portfolio.
  • Provides portfolio reports to Chief Lending Officer as requested.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge of current MA Bank products and services, as well as corresponding bank policies, procedures, and processes; stays current on regulations affecting MA Bank products and services.
  • Provides effective customer service by answering customer questions; investigating and correcting errors; resolving problems or other issues as required ensuring staff are also providing effective customer service.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

  • Represents MA Bank in various community, civic, and community reinvestment functions to further enhance the Banks image and develop additional business.
  • Promotes other bank products by staying current on products available in other bank departments; matching customers to new services and product promotions; ascertaining customers' needs.
  • Complies with bank operations and security policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and work area; dressing in accordance with bank dress code; keeping work area stocked with required supplies; organizing workspace for efficiency and appearance; reporting malfunctions of computers and other equipment.
  • Maintains customer confidentiality and protects bank operations by guarding customers personal and account information; being vigilant regarding potential information security threats
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with regulatory guidelines governing financial institutions and MA Bank policies and procedures by completing assigned and voluntary training; reading and reviewing MA Bank polices & procedures at time of hire and subsequent revisions.
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of financial lending standards, principles and practices including good understanding of lending calculations (APY, APR, amortization, etc.)
  • Good persuasion skills with ability to motivate and influence others and cultivate key relationships in the community.
  • Proven ability to ensure that all assigned department tasks/projects are fully implemented and completed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Good verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgement and work independently utilizing strong time management and planning skills to meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to complete daily tasks with minimal supervision or oversight.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other employees.
  • Good knowledge of lending software including Onboard Loans Lending Platform or comparable web-software.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office including proficiency in Word and Outlook. Good working knowledge of Excel and WebEquity software preferred.
  • Experience working with Adobe Acrobat and electronic signature software products, such as, E-Sign.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, finance, business or related area or equivalent combination of education and related work experience required
  • Previous experience in lending required with experience in commercial lending preferred.
