Part-Time Football Athletic Training Student Aide

The Athletic Training Student Aide is responsible for first responder needs of the student-athletes of the designated sport(s).  This position will work closely with the Kansas Football athletic training staff, physicians and medical facilities concerning the student-athletes' health and wellness.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  1. Assist with the sport and supervision of student-athletes as assigned;
  2. Assist with pre-participation physical examinations;
  3. Assist with pre-practice set up and post practice breakdown (medical supplies and equipment);
  4. Properly document injuries of any injured student-athletes;
  5. Follow prescribed rehabilitation and treatment protocols of team physicians when providing health care for injured or sick athletes;
  6. Communicate effectively with athletic training staff regarding injured or sick athletes;
  7. Communicate with strength and conditioning coaches regarding the injured student-athletes strength and conditioning parameters and limitations associated with injury rehabilitation;
  8. Maintain First-Aid CPR and AED certification;
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Expectations of First Responders:

  1. First Responders will follow the protocol outlined below and will be limited to the following responsibilities in the event of an injury:
    • The first trained individual to arrive at the scene of an emergency or injury is to provide initial medical assistance
    • Initiate immediate care and activate the established Emergency Action Procedures
    • Provide basic first aid such as splinting, wound care, and ICE application when indicated
    • Provide basic life support skills such as CPR, rescue breathing, airway obstruction techniques, and shock.
  2. The Student Aide is NOT permitted to perform evaluation techniques, apply any therapeutic treatment modalities other than ICE, and apply any kind of therapeutic exercise protocol without the direct supervision of the Certified Athletic Trainer. The Student Aide will be required to read, understand, and comply with this policy prior to participation in any clinical and/or field experience.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Full-time student at the University of Kansas;
  • Ability to maintain confidential information;
  • CPR Certification;
  • Ability to work irregular schedule including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for Federal Work Study;
  • Enrollment in Exercise Science program, or related healthcare area of study.
