GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director/Coordinator, the Program Instructor I will be primarily responsible for providing quality leadership and supervision, in aerobic and/or fitness classes, while maintaining a safe, non-competitive environment for YMCA members.

KNOW HOW

  • Experience leading group exercise is preferred.
  • A minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Knowledge of basic exercise science and fitness class leadership is preferred.
  • Ability to learn and successfully demonstrate aerobic choreography.
  • Verbally provide clear concise directions and visually inspect classroom for safety
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention, New Employee Orientation and other wellness department and designated Branch training, or the ability to obtain within 60-90 days of employment.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise participants during class in order to ensure safety.
  • Introduce yourself and make efforts to recognize members on subsequent visits.
  • Develop and maintain relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  • Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
  • Assist in monitoring and improving the cleanliness of the facility.
  • Be available to class participants both before and after fitness classes to answer questions and follow-up on any questions you cannot answer during class time.
  • Arrive for shift on time and dressed appropriately following the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis dress code. 
  • Substitute shifts and demonstrate exercises as needed in the Wellness department.
  • Maintain Continuing Education Credits and other trainings to keep all certifications current.                           
  • Provide safe programs and environment for all participants, volunteers and staff.
  • Conducts self in accordance with the YMCA Mission
  • Actively participate in the Invest-In-Youth annual campaign.
  • Attend all staff meetings and training associated with the Aerobics/Wellness Program.
  • Assist with other projects or activities as needed.
