GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction and supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Team Lead I will be responsible for overseeing staff and children in designated programs, ensuring a healthy, safe and loving environment.  The Team Leadwill demonstrate Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility while providing for children’s social, physical, spiritual and mental well-being and will interact positively with parents to develop a trusting relationship. 

KNOW HOW

  • Must be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma, or its equivalent and have at least one year of experience working directly with children, preferably in a school-age program setting (2-3 years preferred).
  • Must have an understanding of the stages of child development and age appropriate curriculum for school age children.
  • Must have experience in supervising staff and handling conflict situations with members and staff.
  • Must be capable of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with staff, members, program participants, and with the general public.
  • Must be able to work as a team member and possess the core values that meet the YMCA mission.
  • Ability to obtain Heartsaver CPR and First Aid certifications, Child Abuse Prevention training, Safety and Risk Management Training, New Employee Orientation and other training required for YMCA youth workers within 60-90 days of employment.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Designated as First Responder in emergencies or accidents/incidents.
  2. Provide a quality environment in programs, taking into consideration the needs of each child and the goals and objectives of the YMCA.
  3. Assist with hiring, training and evaluation of staff.
  4. Be responsible for the safety of the children at all times and to carry out emergency procedures when necessary.
  5. Attend and contribute to all staff meetings and in-service training. 
  6. Adhere to and maintain the cleaning schedule as set forth by the Program Director.
  7. Put safety first in all activities by using developmentally appropriate activities at all times.
  8. Adhere to the YMCA dress code and assist in monitoring staff for appropriate dress.
  9. Regulate staff schedule changes and make revisions as needed.
  10. Delegate tasks as needed.
  11. Professionally handle any conflict or emergency situation that may arise with staff or members.
  12. Assist in maintaining inventory of supplies, snacks and tags.
  13. Role model positive interaction with children, parents and staff using the core values as guidelines.
  14. Coordinate substitutes as necessary.
  15. Anything deemed necessary by the Program Director in regards to the job position.

MEMBER INVOLVEMENT SKILLS

  • Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
  • Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and activities.
  • Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  • Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
  • Support our YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to participate.
  • Articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
  • Provide an environment where the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized and diversity is valued

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to visibly observe children, despite ongoing distractions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and transport such weight from one location to another.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend at the knees and waist and wok in a kneeling position.
  • Ability to serve snack.
  • Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
  • Ability to communicate with children and parents effectively.
  • Ability to reason and solve problems.
  • Ability to make sound judgment and decisions, despite being distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.

EFFECT ON END RESULT

  • The program will run smoothly throughout the year. 
  • Staff and parents will cooperate to make the program a better place for the children.
  • Participants will enjoy the program and feel positive about being involved in the YMCA.
