About the Role

The Editorial Designer is responsible for designing and formatting print and digital materials in a method that aligns with our brand, house style, and design principles. The position requires high attention to detail and quality, with exemplary communication and collaboration skills across departments to deliver on the product vision.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Design and layout educational content, including textbooks, workbooks, teaching materials, and digital assets.
  • Develop and refine templates and master pages to be used throughout production.
  • Develop and refine technical specifications and guidelines for layout, typesetting, and imagery for products and programs.
  • Proofread and verify formatting, adherence to specifications, and overall design quality from draft to final production.
  • Optimize content for both print and digital platforms, ensuring that all deliverables are formatted and produced to meet accessibility standards to guarantee that content is usable by all end users.
  • Work closely with Creative and Editorial teams to translate complex information into visually clear and engaging deliverables.
  • Collaborate effectively with Production Managers to ensure designs align with production specifications, print requirements, and digital functionality.
  • Assist Production Manager with vendor relations.
  • Partner with digital team on interactive content, eBooks, and online learning materials to ensure a seamless experience across products and services.
  • Collaborate with production artists, technical artists, and a/v teams to integrate visual elements effectively.
  • Assist with preparing and packaging final design files for print and digital production, ensuring adherence to specifications and best practices.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on layouts, typography, spacing, imagery, resolution, and accessibility compliance.
  • Troubleshoot layout issues, preflight files, and refine designs based on feedback from stakeholders.
  • Aid in typesetting, image modification, and photo manipulation during peak production periods.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records and documentation for editorial design.
  • Collaborate with Production Managers and Digital Asset Coordinator to ensure editorial design assets and program assets, such as imagery are properly formatted and organized and adhere to best practices before being uploaded to the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.

 

Requirements and Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Visual Arts, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in an editorial design role or similar preferred.
  • Strong understanding of print and digital production processes.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop,) and other relevant design software.
  • Standard knowledge of image rights and permissions.
  • Excellent collaboration within a team setting and across multiple departments.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize accordingly to meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to quality.
