SUMMARY

The Trade Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring the organization’s adherence to global trade regulations and for managing the import/export compliance programs, customs activities, and commercial claims processes. This role serves as a subject matter expert on international trade regulations and collaborates cross-functionally to mitigate risk, optimize efficiency, and uphold regulatory standards that align with business goals.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Trade Compliance & Customs Operations

  • Support import/export compliance controls, SOPs, and trade compliance programs.
  • Provide training and guidance to leadership and colleagues on import processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee participation in trade security and partnership programs (ex., C-TPAT, PIP, AEO), ensuring compliance.
  • Manage U.S. Customs Reconciliation and Post Summary Correction (PSC) processes.
  • Ensure proper documentation and adherence to Free Trade Agreements (ex., USMCA), including certification and verification.
  • Prepare and submit binding ruling requests, prior disclosures, and agency-required documentation.
  • Liaise with customs brokers, CBP, and Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) to resolve import/export issues.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable U.S. and international customs regulations through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate customs clearance.

Classification & Valuation

  • Accurately classify goods using HTSUS and Schedule B codes; maintain a comprehensive classification database.
  • Provide expert guidance on valuation, country of origin, marking requirements, and applicable duties/taxes.

Auditing & Reporting

  • Conduct audits of import/export entries and AES filings to ensure accuracy and identify discrepancies.
  • Develop compliance dashboards and reports to track performance, risks, and improvement opportunities.

Training & Advisory

  • Facilitate internal training on customs compliance and regulatory updates.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on Incoterms and their application in international and domestic contracts.
  • Advise Commercial, Logistics, and Finance teams on tariffs, duties, and evolving trade policies.

Continuous Learning

  • Stay current on global trade laws and best practices through continuous professional development.

Commercial Claims Resolution:

  • Lead the end-to-end resolution of commercial claims related to international and domestic trade.
  • Investigate claims, assess validity against contracts/specifications, and drive resolution with internal and external parties.
  • Negotiate and finalize settlements or provide recommendations to management based on data and risk assessment.
  • Coordinate claim documentation and financial adjustments with internal Finance/Administration teams.
  • Maintain accurate claims records and generate reports to identify trends and root causes
  • Travel required up to 20% by whichever means is the most appropriate use of resources (for example, air, road, rail, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain, or a related field
  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) or Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) designation.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in international trade compliance and customs operations.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, HTS classification, valuation, and FTAs.
  • Experience managing commercial claims and negotiating with external partners.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and trade compliance software/tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in the metals, recycling, or similar commodity trading industry.
  • Experience with C-TPAT program management.
  • Experience with claims handling or dispute resolution

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with administration, logistics, finance, and customer service teams.
  • Routinely work independently
  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and company standards related to contract and logistics activities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to achieve highest productivity while maintaining work quality
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
