Position Summary:
The Vertical Transportation Specialist I plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and code compliance of all vertical transportation systems—elevators, escalators, lifts—within the assigned region.
Essential Functions:
- Conducts Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI-1) certified field inspections of elevators, escalators, and other vertical transportation systems to ensure compliance with ASME A17.1 and other applicable safety codes and regulations.
- Reviews and approves third-party inspection and condition survey reports for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Assists in the enforcement of corrective actions and safety measures based on inspection results.
- Provides subject matter expertise and technical guidance to property and project managers regarding maintenance standards, equipment condition, and performance expectations.
- Performs site visits to verify contractor maintenance activities and adherence to service agreements.
- Analyzes maintenance reports and system performance data to identify service gaps and make recommendations for resolution.
- Supports the development and execution of regional VT strategies, policies, and processes in collaboration with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Maintains and updates a detailed regional inventory of vertical transportation systems, including equipment condition, service priorities, and modernization needs.
- Ensures accurate and consistent data entry into GSA’s asset management systems, such as the National Computerized Maintenance Management System (NCMMS).
- Assists in the planning, oversight, and technical evaluation of VT-related projects including new installations, repairs, and modernizations.
- Provides input and review on construction and design documents to ensure alignment with federal regulations and safety standards.
- Works with stakeholders to establish priorities, budgets, and timelines for VT capital improvement projects.
- Serves as a regional point of contact for VT contractors, providing coordination and oversight related to performance, compliance, and contract deliverables.
- Offers guidance and consultation to GSA personnel at all levels on VT policy, procedures, and best practices.
- Communicates changes to codes, standards, and policies effectively to both internal teams and external partners.
- Participates in national and regional initiatives aimed at improving VT safety, reliability, and modernization planning.
- Conducts research into emerging technologies, materials, and maintenance methods in the VT field.
- Recommends updates to policies, handbooks, and checklists based on field observations and regulatory updates.
- Performs duties that require significant physical activity such as climbing, bending, and working in confined or elevated spaces.
- Works safely in potentially hazardous environments, including exposure to electrical components, mechanical noise, temperature extremes, and construction conditions.
