Position Overview:

The Bucky Mascot is responsible for embodying the spirit and pride of Charleston Southern by performing as the official mascot at various university events, including athletic games, student activities, and community outreach programs. The mascot will engage with fans, students, alumni, and the public to promote school spirit, foster a positive atmosphere, and represent the university’s values and traditions.


Key Responsibilities:

•    Performance and Engagement: Portray the university mascot in a lively, enthusiastic, and professional manner at home games, pep rallies, alumni events, and other university-sponsored activities.
•    Crowd Interaction: Energize crowds by leading cheers and engaging with fans of all ages to enhance the event experience.
•    Costume Maintenance: Ensure the mascot costume is properly maintained, cleaned, and stored according to university guidelines.
•    Event Coordination: Collaborate with the athletics department, event staff, and cheerleading team to plan and execute performances and appearances.
•    Community Outreach: Represent the university at community events, charity functions, and promotional activities as a positive ambassador for CSU.
•    Social Media Presence: Participate in photo shoots, video recordings, and social media campaigns to promote the mascot and university brand.
•    Uphold University Values: Maintain a high standard of behavior, sportsmanship, and professionalism while in costume and interacting with the public in accordance with CSU student handbook.


Qualifications

•    Enrollment Status: Must be a currently enrolled student at CSU in good academic standing.
•    Physical Requirements: Ability to perform in a full-body mascot costume for extended periods, including in various weather conditions. Must have sufficient stamina, agility, and coordination to execute choreographed routines and spontaneous interactions.
•    Personality: Outgoing, energetic, and enthusiastic with a passion for promoting school spirit.
•    Communication Skills: Strong non-verbal communication skills to convey emotions and excitement through gestures and body language while in costume.
•    Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with cheerleaders, event staff, and other university personnel.
•    Availability: Flexible schedule to accommodate evening, weekend, and occasional travel commitments for games and events.
•    Prior Experience: Previous experience in dance, theater, or performance is preferred but not required.

 


Hours:

Part-time, approximately 0-15 hours per week.


Compensation:

Hourly wage, based on university student employment guidelines.

  • Students enrolled in courses during the semester they are working are FICA-exempt.
  • Students not enrolled in the semester are required to pay FICA taxes.
  • Students are not permitted to work during chapel or scheduled class times.

Student Employee:

  • Must be an active student at Charleston Southern University.

Federal Work-Study:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Charleston Southern University.
  • Must have completed all documentation required by Financial Aid.
  • Must have accepted their financial aid award.

Working Conditions

  • Performances may occur indoors or outdoors, in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • The mascot costume may be physically demanding, requiring performers to stay hydrated and take breaks as needed.
  • Schedule includes irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings, based on the university’s event calendar.
