Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Molecular Pathology Supervisor, the FISH Molecular Technologist performs with proficiency and understanding the tests and procedures assigned to the Molecular FISH department. The position is responsible for specimen processing, quality control, analyzing cases, equipment maintenance, maintaining logs and other QC documents, training new employees, and all other duties assigned by the manager. The Tech is also familiar with intermediate laboratory chemistry including the usage of pH meters, molarity and normality. Basic FISH experience is preferred, however, willing to train the right candidate. The FISH Tech is also responsible for adhering to HIPAA standards and strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace.
Position Schedule: M-F, either 9am or 10am start with rotating weekend coverage
Essential Duties:
- Accurately and efficiently process various specimen types.
- Conduct cellular enrichments, prepare slides, perform pre-treatment, hybridization, post-wash, and counterstain for microscopic analysis
- Accurately document and maintain logs and lab data sheets
- Clean and maintain supplies and equipment
- Ensure adequate supplies and reagents are kept on hand and ordered in timely manner
- Respond appropriately to email and telephone inquiries from pathologists, hospital personnel, and external laboratory sites concerning specimens
- Conduct accurate microscopic analysis of heme-based and tissue FISH testing
- Image capture appropriate number of cells on each case using computerized imaging system
- Interpret FISH panel results, noting abnormalities and/or discrepancies
- Document and maintain analysis records
- Assist with training new employees as needed
- Other duties as assigned
