Description

The Manager of Cataloging Services leads a team of paraprofessional catalogers in the creation of high-quality MARC records that meet the cataloging needs of library customers. This role combines hands-on bibliographic expertise with team leadership, policy development, and operational oversight. The manager is responsible for ensuring cataloging output aligns with current standards (RDA, AACR2, MARC 21), classification systems (Unabridged and Abridged Dewey, LC), and Brodart cataloging system requirements. The position may be remote, with direct oversight of staff located at corporate headquarters and potential future remote catalogers. The manager will also play a key role in updating cataloging policies, training new staff, maintaining quality control, driving productivity in a fast-paced production environment, and participating on product development teams.

  • Supervise cataloging paraprofessionals, providing coaching, feedback, and accountability to department standards and company policies
  • Develop and maintain cataloging policies aligned with Library of Congress best practices and customer requirements
  • Train new catalogers in cataloging standards, classification systems, subject heading usage and Brodart cataloging systems and standards
  • Produce enhanced MARC records using Abridged Dewey and Library of Congress (LC, AC and LCGFT) subject headings
  • Conduct quality control checks, provide cataloging feedback to each team member and correct cataloging errors at the root to prevent downstream production consequences
  • Prioritize departmental workloads to meet customer deadlines and service expectations
  • Create original MARC 21 cataloging records using RDA and AACR2, applying Unabridged Dewey and Library of Congress classification and subject headings
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support product development and service enhancements
  • Monitor team productivity and implement strategies to improve throughput while maintaining quality
  • Build systems, workflows and personnel to support growth in cataloging demand
  • Assist with onboarding and integration of future remote cataloging staff
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives to improve customer experience and operational efficiency
  • Represent cataloging services in internal meetings and planning sessions

Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent cataloging experience
  • Extensive experience in original cataloging using MARC 21, RDA, AACR2, Dewey (Unabridged and Abridged), LC Classification and subject headings
  • Strong understanding of cataloging workflows, metadata standards, and bibliographic description.
  • Knowledge of BIBFRAME linked data concepts as well as other evolving concepts is a plus
  • Proven leadership experience in a cataloging or technical services environment
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and team management skills
  • Experience in a production-oriented environment with a focus on quality and efficiency
  • Ability to work independently and manage a geographically distributed team
  • Computer skills including the ability to use Word, Excel, Outlook as well as the ability to learn Brodart’s internal operational systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including negotiation skills, presentation skills, problem resolution skills, communication skills, and professional appearance
  • Attention to detail and highly organized
  • Strong planning skills and time management skills.
  • Background in technical services product development or service innovation preferred
  • Familiarity with vendor-side cataloging workflows preferred.
