Description

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with NPS at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is recruiting a Restoration Technician to participate in restoration projects.

 

Work will primarily include natural resource survey, recording, and monitoring associated with vegetation and landscape restoration projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist natural resources staff to plan and complete natural resource field work;
  • Assist vegetation management, biological surveys, invasive plant control management, habitat, restoration, grazing management, and wildlife management;
  • Complete written trip reports;
  • Contribute to written technical natural resource reports;
  • Invasive species mapping and treatment, including the use of herbicide.  Must obtain state issued pesticide applicator license; and
  • Work in the park’s greenhouse which includes monitoring, watering, planting, maintaining, and seed collection.

 

Timeline:

  • October 20, 2025 - mid March 2026, 20 weeks;
  • Full time (40 hours/week); and
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8-10 hours per day.

 

Location:

Encompassing over 1.25 million acres and tucked among the red-rock canyons and mesas on the Colorado Plateau, Glen Canyon’s unique desert region is characterized by expansive areas of exposed and uplifted rocks. Glen Canyon offers unparalleled opportunities for water-based & backcountry recreation. The recreation area stretches for hundreds of miles from Lees Ferry in Arizona to the Orange Cliffs of southern Utah, encompassing scenic vistas, geologic wonders, and a vast panorama of human history. Project work will be conducted in the Lees Ferry region.

 

Field conditions are typical for the high deserts. They can include hot, arid days with high exposure to the sun, as well as cold, winter weather. Spring weather is highly variable and unpredictable with extended periods of winds. Fall weather is usually mild.

 

 

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation: $19 hourly;

Benefits:

Housing: Government housing may be available for rent.  The unit that would likely be available is a shared housing unit.  Because this is shared housing, the incumbent would not be allowed to have family live in the house with them and they would not be allowed to keep a pet in the house or yard.  Cellular phone service may be available and internet service would be at the incumbent's expense through a local internet provider;

Travel: Camping per diem provided per night in the field, not to exceed $630;

Uniform Stipend: Not to exceed $200.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Education and technical experience;
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record; and
  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation.

 

Preferred:

  • Experience applying herbicide;
  • Experience using a GPS to collect spatial data; and
  • GIS to make maps.

 

Physical Demands:
The Restoration Technician will be required to hike and navigate rugged, steep terrain for extended periods, often carrying up to 50 lbs of gear. The position involves working in varying weather conditions, 
including temperatures ranging from 95°F to exceeding 100°F in summer and cold conditions in winter. This will include overnight camping or backpacking for multiple nights, hiking in rough terrain, and working in adverse weather.

The technician will need to stand, kneel, crouch, or bend for long periods during surveys and equipment setup, as well as camp overnight in rustic conditions. The role also involves working in remote environments and driving safely on unpaved roads. The technician must be adaptable to physically demanding field conditions and be capable of working both independently and as part of a team, requiring flexibility, stamina, and focus.
