Description

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the National Park Service and Yosemite Conservancy at Yosemite National Park is recruiting 1 (One) Education Coordinator to participate in education services. 

The Education Program Coordinator will collaborate with a variety of partners to successfully engage local youth with Yosemite National Park. The incumbent will work with colleagues to coordinate, develop, facilitate school programming, contribute to curriculum reorganization, refinement efforts, as well as mentor and support student staff with field trip facilitation. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

The  Research Associate will work effectively in collaboration with youth and partners. Specific responsibilities associated with this job include:

  • Facilitates and refines place-based and off-site learning experiences with local Public-School students centered around Yosemite’s natural, cultural and historical resources;
  • Collaborates with colleagues and local Public-School educators to coordinate student experiences while taking steps to ensure whole-child wellness and teacher satisfaction throughout the planning and facilitation of programming;
  • Works independently and in a team setting to research and develop promotional and educational materials designed for youth and families, including self-guided and asynchronous materials;
  • Plans, organizes and prepares supplies and materials to effectively engage youth in their public lands through self-guided and facilitated experiences;
  • Answer student questions via email or by phone call or to assist them with their class projects or for interest in finding employment and internships. Level or questions range from grade school level to undergraduate college level;
  • Maintain the central Education Office email inbox to ensure program requests are responded to in a timely manner and requesters have the appropriate information to connect students virtually or in person to Yosemite;
  • Create and maintain spreadsheets to track statistics of all programming and outreach events done by our office to complete yearly reports and grant submissions;
  • Recruitment of additional support from park partners for the 4th grade field trips; and
  • Facilitate meetings with volunteers and teachers who are involved with field trips to ensure proper communication before and after trips.

 

Timeline:

  • October 13, 2025, to October 13 2026, 52 project wks;
  • Full time (40 hours/week); and
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday 8 hrs per week.

Yosemite National Park is world-renowned for its giant granite walls, waterfalls, sequoias, beautiful meadows and snow-capped mountains. The park encompasses nearly 750,000 acres of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and is 94% designated wilderness. The elevation ranges from just under 2,000’ to just over 13,000’, and many ecosystems can be found within, including foothill chaparral, oak woodland, mixed conifer forest, subalpine meadows, and alpine fell fields. The park hosts over 1,500 plant taxa and many animals, including special status, threatened, and endangered species. Yosemite is one of the most sought after climbing and hiking destinations in the world. Many additional recreational opportunities abound including botanizing, birding, fishing, swimming, and skiing.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation: $25.50 hourly;

Housing: Park Housing will be provided to the selected participant at additional costs to the employee. Housing can look like a private bedroom with shared communal space or a shared bedroom with shared communal space (depending on availability at the time the position starts). 

Uniform: Not-to-exceed $200.

  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of the Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or provide documentation to National Park Service (NPS) human resources confirming that an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to commencing the position. Please indicate this in your application;
  •  An energetic, motivated, proactive, and highly organized approach to work;
  • Experience working in partnerships of non-profit, city, state and/or federal governments;
  • A desire to work with young people and familiarity with developing and facilitating youth engagement experiences;
  • Ability to contribute to multiple projects simultaneously, work within tight deadlines and prioritize work as necessary;
  • Ability to speak effectively with groups and write effectively for a wide-variety of audiences;
  • Comfortable working independently and collaboratively as a member of a team;
  • Attention to detail and process;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other platforms used to coordinate complex teams, e.g., Google Drive, Teams, SharePoint, Zoom;
  • Working knowledge of graphic design applications e.g., Illustrator, InDesign, or Canva;
  • Fluency in another language(s) a plus but not required;
  • Flexibility to be able to work evenings and weekends, as needed; and
  • Demonstrate a strong ability to build and maintain positive relationships with community members, organizations, and stakeholders.

 

Physical Demands:

  • A mix of indoor and outdoor work;
  • Outdoor: The participant will be required to facilitate field trips for extended periods of time, these could include long walks in a variety of weather and lift materials of up to 40 pounds;
  • Indoor: The participant will engage in office work to coordinate and respond to inquiries as they come. This could include periods of time seating or standing in offices; and
  • The participant may need to drive to different locations in the park to facilitate programs in different districts. Driving periods can be long depending on traffic and location.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, stand, walk, bend, and have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, and ability to adjust focus working with computer business equipment and other job/industry specific equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.

The overall nature of the (Indoors/Office) position is sedentary, requiring little physical effort and occasional light exertion. There is occasional exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and temperature changes.
