Description

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the National Park Service at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is recruiting three (3) Interpretation and Education Positions to participate in interpretation and education activities.

This project provides hands-on experience supporting the interpretive and education staff of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, enhancing visitor engagement and resource stewardship. Participants will assist with daily operations, deliver curriculum-based programs to school groups, and help plan and implement special events. They will engage the public through community outreach and provide visitor services at the visitor center, sharing information about recreational opportunities and park resources. Cross-training opportunities with other park divisions offer exposure to multiple aspects of the National Park Service mission. Throughout the project, participants will contribute to the conservation of natural and cultural resources while fostering public appreciation and understanding of the park’s unique offerings.

 

Primary Responsibilities: Winter Education Technician – 1 Position

  • Work alongside interpretive and education staff to support daily operations of a federal land management agency;
  • Present curriculum-based educational programs to school groups;
  • Assist with planning and implementation of special events;
  • Engage the public through outreach activities in local communities;
  • Provide daily visitor services at the visitor center, including sharing information about recreational opportunities and park resources;
  • Participate in cross-training opportunities with other park divisions to gain exposure to different aspects of the National Park Service mission;
  • Support conservation of natural and cultural resources while fostering public appreciation and understanding; and
  • Compensation: $23 hourly.

 

Primary Responsibilities: Winter Interpretation and Education Interns – 2 Positions

  • Work alongside interpretive and education staff to support daily operations of a federal land management agency;
  • Develop and deliver guided walks and interpretive talks highlighting the park’s natural and cultural resources;
  • May assist with presenting curriculum-based educational programs to school groups;
  • Engage the public through outreach activities in local communities;
  • Provide daily visitor services at the visitor center, including sharing information about recreational opportunities and park resources;
  • Participate in cross-training opportunities with other park divisions to gain exposure to different aspects of the National Park Service mission;
  • Support conservation of natural and cultural resources while fostering public appreciation and understanding; and
  • Compensation: $19 hourly.

 

Timeline:

  • October 27, 2025 - April 12, 2026, 24 project weeks; and
  • Full time (40 hours/week); 5/8’s; This schedule may include weekends, some holidays, and occasional evenings.

 

Location:

Page is a small city located in northern Arizona near the Utah border. Founded in 1957 as a housing community for workers building the Glen Canyon Dam, Page has grown into a hub for tourism and outdoor recreation. The city is a gateway to the stunning natural wonders of the region, including Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Lake Powell. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area spans nearly 1.25 million acres across northern Arizona and southern Utah. The area is centered around Lake Powell, a 186-mile-long reservoir created by the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. The park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, camping, and scenic photography. Visitors can explore dramatic sandstone canyons, unique rock formations, and cultural sites such as Ancestral Puebloan sites and petroglyphs.

Housing: Housing is shared. Each resident will have a private bedroom, while bathrooms, kitchen, and living areas are shared. Residents may have multiple house mates depending on unit assigned. Housing units located in the Wahweap - approximately 7 miles from workstation. Rent ranges from $300 to $330 bi-weekly, depending on the housing unit assigned. Reimbursement of $100 total per month ($25 weekly) will be provided to the selected participant for housing.

Qualifications

Required: Winter Education Technician

  • Experience working with school groups, camps, or youth programs (formal or informal);
  • Skills in lesson planning and program delivery, especially curriculum-based education;
  • Experience developing or delivering interpretive talks, guided walks, or hands-on activities;
  • Ability to communicate complex natural or cultural resource topics to audiences of different ages;
  • Customer service or visitor services experience (such as working in a visitor center, museum, or education setting);
  • Working effectively with staff, volunteers, or community groups;
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record; and
  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to National Park Service human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.   • Experience working with the public, answering questions, or providing information;
  • Assisting with programs, guided walks, classroom lessons, or youth activities;
  • Ability to explain ideas clearly to audiences of different ages and backgrounds;
  • Working effectively with staff, volunteers, or community groups;
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record; and
  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to National Park Service human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, stand, walk, bend, and have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, and ability to adjust focus working with computer business equipment and other job/industry specific equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.

This position involves both indoor and outdoor work, requiring some physical effort such as loading and unloading brochures and educational/interpretive materials, as well as occasional hiking for guided walks, field trips, or community events.

 There is occasional exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and temperature changes.
