Position title: Supervisor I, Zero Waste

Reports to: Zero Waste Operations Manager

FLSA Status: Full Time/Non-Exempt

Compensation: $29.50 to $32.64 hourly / per hour 

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, with occasional weekend work

Location: This position is 100% in person, located at 1560 Berger Drive San Jose, CA 95112

Travel: Local travel may be required up to 50% of the time, transporting Corpsmember crews to different job sites around Santa Clara County

One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Department Information:

Zero Waste Silicon Valley is a program SJCC+CS that strives to tackle two of California’s most significant challenges at once: systemic barriers to employment for transition-age youth and the annual disposal of 30 million tons of waste. We provide technical training in skills like driving a forklift, processing E-waste, and interpersonal skills such as conflict management, communication, and effective teamwork. Operational projects include landfill waste diversion, public education and outreach, and more.

 

Position Summary:

The Zero Waste Supervisor plays an important operations role for the San Jose Conservation Corps’ Zero Waste unit. The Supervisor is responsible for maintaining internal records and managing several project databases. The Supervisor also provides operational assistance to the Zero Waste Team to ensure that our projects and special events work plan goals are executed. The Zero Waste Supervisor also works to develop effective relationships with shareholders in the Zero Waste Industry. Additionally, they play a lead role in engaging with members of the public. This position will oversee SJCC’s efforts to divert different types of waste from landfills, as well as related programs aimed at increasing the recycling of waste in general.

 

Job Duties:

General Operations & Administration

  • Manage the Zero Waste email inbox, ensuring that management is copied on communications
  • Coordinate attendance tracking, meeting preparation, and binder creation for routes.
  • Track and report on project deliverables, including waste collection weights, quantities, and team progress.
  • Maintain warehouse organization, coordinate with haulers for pickups, and provide quarterly waste totals.
  • Prepare and submit attendance, reports, evaluations, disciplinary forms, and incident reports on time.
  • Lock up Berger site daily and perform other duties as assigned.

 

Zero Waste Routes & Events

  • Support residential/business flyering, waste collection routes, and Saturday event operations.
  • Collect and report waste material data for all events and routes.
  • Assist with event material organization alongside the E-Waste team.

 

Leadership & Team 

  • Supervise and lead corpsmembers in daily project work, providing skills training and mentoring.
  • Foster corpsmember development, positive group dynamics, and a supportive community.
  • Enforce SJCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and model professional conduct.
  • Actively participate in team meetings, trainings, and discussion sessions.
  • Contribute to a workplace culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ensure all staff and corpsmembers feel safe, respected, and valued.

 

Safety & Risk Management

  • Complete and submit pre and post trip vehicle inspections; oversee maintenance of vehicles, keys, gas cards, and registration papers.
  • Conduct tailgate safety meetings on a daily basis and after all work-related accidents, keeping a written record of each meeting
  • Assure that Corpsmembers work safely and wear proper PPE at all times
  • Ensure familiarity with SJCC+CS policies and guidelines; complete paperwork for every accident reported
  • Communicate vehicle/work-related injuries to the Management team
  • Identify common safety hazards
  • Read and understand product labels

Work Environment & Requirements

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on occasionally uneven and/or slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

 

Equipment Used: The incumbent of this position will be utilizing various Company vehicles. Vehicles include sedans, passenger vans, pickup trucks with a trailer or flat bed, box trucks, and/or forklift with the proper training.

Employment At-Will

The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School is an “At-Will” employer. This means that employment with SJCC+CS is voluntarily entered into and staff members are free to resign at any time. Similarly, SJCC+CS may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or prior notice, as it deems appropriate. This at-will employment relationship can be changed only in a written agreement signed by the staff member and the Executive Director of SJCC+CS.

 

**SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated. Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma or GED
  • 1 year of supervisory experience leading young adults, OR
    • Equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to work in team-oriented settings and lead others
  • 1 year of work experience in any of the following areas: waste materials recovery, edible food recovery, zero waste community outreach, composting, or similar.
  • Proficiency in using tools/safety equipment appropriate for various work projects.
  • The ability to solve problems in the field with minimal assistance.
  • Strong commitment to improving the quality of life for urban youth.
  • The ability to use, and teach others to use, power and hand tools safely.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and first aid/CPR.
  • The ability to maintain detailed records and documentation.
  • Customer Service Experience - able to identify and resolve customer concerns.
  • Computer literate.

 

Driving Record and Requirements: This position requires driving one or more company vehicles. After an offer is made, the candidate must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record, and maintain a record satisfactory to the organization's auto insurance carrier. The incumbent must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Employees will also be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination. A physical exam may be required for positions that regularly transport passengers.

Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo Live Scan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history record check.

Drug Screen: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo and pass a 5-panel drug screen.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bi-lingual (English and any other language)

  • Degree from an accredited 2 or 4-year college in Environmental Science, Biology, Education, or similar field

  • Possession of any of the following certifications: OSHA 30, CPR Instructor, TRUE Advisor, SWANA, Master Composter, OSHA Train the Trainer, Forklift Trainer, or similar

  • Experience driving with flatbeds and trailers
