Overview  

As a Network Infrastructure Technician (Tier 1) at Surf Internet, you play a crucial role in maintaining and managing our fiber optic and wireless network infrastructures. Your primary responsibilities include ensuring the continuous operation of our network services, addressing and resolving network issues, and performing both routine and emergency maintenance. Your work is vital in delivering reliable internet services to our residential and commercial customers. 

Location:

The ideal candidate will dispatch from their residence, preferably located in or near Lansing, MI, and will be expected to make a weekly visit to either the Byron Center or Howell office for restocking supplies and equipment.

As a secondary option, the role may be based out of the Howell office, primarily servicing the surrounding area. However, service demand in Howell is typically lower than on the west side. Therefore, candidates must be flexible to support higher-demand areas, with up to 50% of the role involving driving time to various service locations.

Job Status: Non-Exempt 

Responsibilities: 

General: 

  • Operate a variety of mechanical equipment, including trucks, trailers, excavators, backhoes, cement mixers, and similar machinery for tower and fiber network infrastructure projects. 

  • Utilize hand and power tools such as drills, saws, grinders, hammers, and other relevant equipment for installation and maintenance tasks. 

  • Strictly adhere to company and industry safety guidelines to ensure a secure work environment, including 100% attachment to towers when working above 6 feet. 

  • Maintain precise site plans and records, including comprehensive photographic documentation for all tower and fiber network locations. 

  • Act as a professional and positive representative of the company in all interactions with customers, vendors, colleagues, and peers. 

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with all stakeholders. 

  • Monitor and manage inventory levels, promptly notifying the purchasing department when supplies are running low or depleted. 

Issue and Ticket Management: 

  • Manage service tickets related to outages and technical problems. 

  • Respond promptly to tickets, diagnosing and resolving issues to restore service and minimize downtime. 

Repairs and Troubleshooting: 

  • Conduct thorough troubleshooting and repair tasks for both fiber optic and wireless networks. 

  • Handle after-hours emergency repairs and maintenance to address network damages and service interruptions. 

  • Utilize OTDR accurately and efficiently to troubleshoot fiber issues 

  • Splicing utilizing single and ribbon splicers mastery to work on fiber repairs and outages 

Documentation and Reporting: 

  • Keep accurate records of network configurations, maintenance activities, and repair logs. 

  • Provide detailed reports on network issues, actions taken, and resolution outcomes. 

Customer Interaction and Support: 

  • Occasionally interface with customers to update them on network status and provide information on outage resolutions. 

  • Ensure clear communication and a positive customer experience. 

Collaboration and Coordination: 

  • Work effectively with team members and other departments to resolve network issues and implement improvements. 

  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative problem-solving efforts. 

Compliance and Safety: 

  • Adhere to company policies, industry regulations, and safety standards in all network-related activities. 

  • Ensure compliance with all operational procedures and best practices. 

Qualifications

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Expertise in fiber optic and wireless network maintenance and troubleshooting. 

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. 

  • Proficiency in networking protocols, tools, and equipment. 

  • Effective communication skills for both internal coordination and customer interaction. 

  • Ability to work independently and handle emergency situations with composure. 

  • Ability to Splice and troubleshoot fiber optics 

  • OTDR understanding of complex situations 

  • LAN and WAN network troubleshooting 

  • Advance knowledge in phone systems 

  • Routing proficiency on multiple routers 

  • Adtran knowledge 

Work Hours and Availability: 

  • Regular working hours with flexibility for after-hours shifts, weekends, and on-call duties as part of a rotating schedule for emergency support. 

  • Willingness to travel for short periods (1-2 days) when required. 

Support and Development: 

  • Access to ongoing professional development and training to enhance your skills and knowledge in network infrastructure management. 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Ability to work in challenging environments, including exposure to inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet, hail, extreme cold, and extreme heat. 

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. 

  • Willingness to travel for extended periods of 2 or more days. 

  • Availability for on-call duty as part of a rotating schedule with other infrastructure and installation techs. 

  • Possess the skills required to systematically troubleshoot complex network systems. 

  • Understanding of basic Radio Frequency and fiber optic terminology and technology. 

  • Ability to work with limited to no supervision. 

  • Proficiency in Networking and Windows
