Overall Responsibility:

Assist surgical and medical staff in the surgical area including supplies and Sterile Processing. Overall duties include assisting with patient transport, surgery room preparation, supplies are available and stocked, turn over (environmental cleaning in between cases, positioning of patient for surgery, sterile processing and some minor scrub (operating room technician). The OR orderly assist with all aspects of the surgical area within their scope of practice as part of a team of operating room professionals.

 

Key tasks and responsibilities (essential functions):

  1. Primary Task: Responsible for maintaining patient safety.
    1. Assist in the transportation of patients to and from the operating room.
    2. Assist the operating room personnel in proper positioning of patient.
    3. Using aseptic technique, assist the OR nurse in the surgical prep procedure.
    4. Will assume and expedite other tasks and duties directed by the OR RN lead or RN in charge of the surgery room.
    5. Assist with the preparation of surgical instrumentation.
    6. Assist with the preparation any surgical linen for procedural use.
  1. Primary Task (A-B) and Secondary Tasks (C-F): Responsible for a clean and safe environment.
    1. Assist in room turnovers to expedite OR utilization.
    2. Restock scrub sinks with masks, scrub brushes, fill soap dispenser.
    3. Will maintain all sterile areas by mopping, floors, wiping walls and furniture per policies & procedures of the facility.
    4. Will assist with high dusting, vents, tops of cabinets, refrigerator, all ledges, and autoclaves, as needed, to ensure a clean and safe environment.
    5. Mop buckets will be cleaned daily using BROAD SPECTRUM CLEANER and mop heads will be maintained per policy.
    6. Assist Housekeeping when needed in cleaning surgical suite at the end of daily schedule insuring all surgical rooms are ready for next days use.
  1. Primary Task: Will assume the task of maintaining the inventory for the operating department including the following:
    1. Will ensure that all surgical areas including sterile supply will maintain an adequate PAR (will use PAR levels as guidelines).
  2. Secondary task: Assist Materials Management to update preference cards as needed.
  3. Secondary Task: Assist with maintaining OR logs and records keeping for OR.
  4. Primary Task: Adheres to established OneCore Health safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  5. Secondary duties: adheres to the sterile processing tech duties (this is generally after the main SPD tech has left for the day):
  1. Ensure that counters and equipment surfaces in the nursing and instrument areas in the surgical department are free of dust.
  2. Arranges instruments and supplies in a convenient organized manner in appropriate storage areas.
  3. Follows appropriate sterilization for instruments and other medical supplies as outlined in the policies and procedures.
  4. Remains available to the clinical and medical staff in and around the OR to ensure appropriate instruments and supplies are available.
  5. Collects instruments at the end of each case for cleaning and sterilizing.
  6. Responsible for being familiar with and carrying out cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing according to policy (packaging, wrapping, loading, record keeping and monitoring of sterilization and supplies.
  7. Autoclave and washer maintenance and testing to ensure running appropriately. Alert Clinical lead RN or designee immediately with any concerns or failures that would threaten the sterility of the instruments/equipment.
  1. Primary Task: Actively participates in the Quality Improvement plan, Infection prevention plan and other ongoing improvement plans and safely programs as part of the OR team.
  2. Primary Task: Follows OSHA and other applicable standards for protection against blood borne pathogens.
  3. Primary Task: Uses good body mechanics to help prevent injuries.
  4. Primary Task: Maintains patient and hospital confidentiality at all times.
  5. Primary Task: Any additional duties as assigned (within scope of practice) per RN, OR RN Clinical lead or designee.

Licensure and Certification: BCLS, if not current, certification within 90 days of hire.

Experience required: Requires a high school certificate or equivalency. Previous experience as a surgical aide preferred.
