Position Summary

This job entails leading and directing Rowland Hall’s Middle School Choir and Upper School Choirs.   Choir is open to any student with a love of singing. In rehearsals and in preparation for a variety of performances for the community, singers will develop healthy vocal technique, strong notational skills, and ensemble responsiveness under the direction of the Choir teacher. Repertoire, selected by the choir teacher, should range from classical choral music to contemporary a cappella, in a variety of styles. Performances over the course of the school year may include music department concerts, assemblies, collaborative visual arts concerts, regional festivals and competitions, and other opportunities in the local community.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead both the Middle School and Upper School choirs, centering the student experience and facilitating deep learning within the arts department.
  • Prepare for and direct 8-10 outside-of-school performances (including school events as well as regional and state competitions) annually is a core responsibility of this position.
  • Meaningfully collaborate with other performing arts faculty in both the Middle School and Upper School.
  • Evaluate and communicate student progress
  • Communicate with students, families, and other faculty proactively 
  • Create and sustain a positive learning environment
  • Be able to utilize technology, with experience preferred in Veracross, Canvas, and Google applications
  • Participate in other events, meetings, and duties as assigned by the administration

Skills and Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree and music classroom experience working with adolescents are strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is focused on the learning and well-being of students. In addition, a Rowland Hall teacher has excellent interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and a commitment to reflecting on their practices and continuously improving them. Strong candidates will also show interest in engaging with the school community while advocating for students, supporting parents, and collaborating with faculty and staff. In addition, the ideal candidate:

  • has the experience, ability, and interest to work with Middle School and Upper School students;
  • is a flexible thinker who is eager to learn and experiment with new concepts, ideas, and evidence-based practices;
  • demonstrates cultural competence in and a commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • has a strength in differentiating curriculum based on individual students’ strengths and areas for growth;
  • demonstrates proficiency using a learning management system, web-based applications, and other online resources;

  • lift up to 35 pounds;

  • exhibit classroom management and organizational skills that balance a fun, creative environment for students while maintaining a safe learning environment.

Additional Information

This is a part-time (.3 FTE), non-benefit eligible, exempt position, reporting to the Head of Upper School. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2025. Rowland Hall reserves the right to close the selection process early if a candidate is identified; applications will be reviewed as they are received. Compensation is based on level of education and years of relevant experience.
