POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodian is responsible for providing consistently phenomenal customer service while maintaining a clean and organized environment for customers and employees.  This position upholds Co-op standards including genuine customer service, department conditions, safety, productivity, and other workplace conditions in a manner that upholds the values of Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op and the co-operative identity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Exceed our customers’ expectations for service and provide a welcoming environment for all in accordance with the Co-op’s customer service standards.
  2. Custodial Responsibilities
    1. Maintain cleanliness of all areas of the Co-op.
    2. Greet customers and provide friendly, helpful, courteous, and prompt customer service.
    3. Refer customers to appropriate staff persons when unable to provide service.
    4. Direct customers to product and product information locations in the store upon request.
    5. Keep the store sales floor orderly and clean by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
    6. Gather and empty trash from all receptacles.
    7. Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
    8. Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
    9. Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
    10. Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
    11. Steam clean or shampoo carpets.
    12. Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment in order to prevent damage to floors, fixtures, or self.
    13. Move furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using carts.
    14. Maintain cleanliness of outside areas by power washing and clearing all debris from grounds, sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas.
    15. Notify appropriate managers concerning the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems and report any damage or malfunction of any equipment.
    16. Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
    17. Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
    18. Maintain a working knowledge of product, back stock, and stocking supplies locations for all departments.
    19. Check prices, clean spills, and perform other housekeeping duties as needed.
    20. Re-stock unsold products and return carts and recyclable containers to their proper receptacles.
    21. Bale cardboard and make cardboard bales when needed.
    22. Keep refuse area tidy and organized.
    23. Ensure all mop rooms are clean and organized.
    24. Perform light maintenance duties as needed.
    25. Must be available to work hours based on the needs of the business and their department. 
  3. Clerk Duties
    1. Adhere to scheduled shifts and be ready for work when shift begins.
    2. Wear proper clothing during shift, including apron and nametag, closed-toe shoes and shirt with sleeves.
  4. Abide by all Co-op policies and procedures as specified in the SNFC Employee Handbook.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Required Experience
    1. Customer Service experience.
  2. Language Ability
    1. Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
    2. Write simple correspondence.
    3. Effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to customers and other employees.
  3. Math Ability
    1. Add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s mentally.
    2. Perform these calculations using units of U.S. currency and weight measurement, volume and distance.
  4. Reasoning Ability
    1. Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
    2. Deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  5. Computer Skills:
    1. Use Email, Nodafi, website and time clock software proficiently.
  6. Operational Equipment Skills
    1. Operate a forklift.
    2. Operate an electric stacker.
    3. Operate a pallet jack.
    4. Operate a cardboard baler and a compactor.
    5. Operate a hand truck and other equipment carts.
  7. Education
    1. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate.

Desired knowledge, skills, ability and experience are not essential to be able to perform the essential duties of the position. 

  1. Additional Customer Service Experience
    1. Previous experience in a high-traffic retail or service environment.
    2. Demonstrated ability to handle diverse customer interactions with patience and professionalism.
  2. Advanced Cleaning and Maintenance Skills
    1. Experience with a wide range of cleaning techniques and maintenance equipment.
    2. Certification in the use of specific cleaning chemicals and safety protocols.
  3. Technical Proficiency
    1. Familiarity with building maintenance software and digital maintenance tracking tools.
    2. Ability to troubleshoot basic mechanical issues.
  4. Problem-Solving Aptitude
    1. Proven track record of identifying and resolving facility-related issues proactively.
    2. Experience in developing and implementing cleaning schedules and procedures.
  5. Attention to Detail
    1. History of maintaining exceptionally high standards of cleanliness and order.
    2. Experience in environments where precision and thoroughness are critical, such as retail or food service industries.
  6. Team Collaboration
    1. Experience working in a unionized environment.
    2. Strong track record of collaborating effectively with diverse teams.
  7. Flexibility and Adaptability
    1. Ability to adapt to changing schedules and priorities, including emergency cleaning tasks.
  8. Experience in setting up for and cleaning up after large events
