Description

The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a full time Substitute Teacher. We are a Preschool - 8 progressive, independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of over 400 students. Since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has grown in size, complexity, and diversity. Summary:

The Philadelphia School seeks a creative, collaborative educator with a deep interest in progressive education and social justice as well as a commitment to personal and professional growth. This position requires interest and experience in integrating curriculum, careful student observation, and co-teaching. As a Substitute Teacher at our school, you will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on student lives, providing instruction as well as guidance, and fostering a positive learning environment where students can bring their best selves to the classroom every day.

The hours for this position are Monday - Friday, generally 8am - 4pm.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide coverage in case of teacher absence, for homeroom and special area subjects such as Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education
  • Support classroom management and/ or transitions in targeted classes on an as needed basis, floating as assigned by division directors
  • Accompany classes to outdoor education days as needed
  • Facilitate the students’ transition to After-school Programming (from 3-4pm)
  • Provide developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for all students, Preschool-8
  • Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Manage classroom behavior and uphold school policies and standards
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet individual student needs
  • Work closely with the supervisor to develop teaching ability
  • Communicate effectively and consistently with school staff and administration as needed with regard to student progress and any classroom issues

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field 
  • 1 - 3 years’ experience working with children in a school or educational setting
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly to various teaching environments, grade levels, and subjects, and to move between classrooms as needed
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Classroom technology proficiency
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality; flexibility and willingness to take on last minute assignments
  • Familiarity with or interest in progressive education and supporting diverse learners
