He/she works under the direction, instruction and supervision of the Registered Physical Therapist and/or appropriate supervisor. The Physical Therapy Assistant needs empathetic communication skills, be flexible, and have respect for the patient’s privacy and property. A positive attitude is a must, dependable techniques in personal hygiene, good observation skills, reliability, and an understanding of the team concept.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibilities and limitations include:

The Physical Therapy Assistant duties are performed under the direction of a Registered Physical Therapist and include:

Provision of client care services which have been planned and delegated by the physical therapist.

Participating in preparation of clinical and progress notes;
-
Participating in educating the client and family; and
-
Participating in in-service programs.

The Physical Therapy Assistant should have all notes reviewed and cosigned by a Registered Physical Therapist.

The qualified Physical Therapist not the Physical Therapist Assistant should be present:

To evaluate the client prior to the initiation of treatment.

Prior to the provision of physical therapy when a change in the physician's plan of care necessitates a change in treatment.

Immediately prior to discontinuing treatment and discharge of the client.
-
Has full understanding and is in compliance with all Agency regulations, policies and job descriptions.

Identifies possible ineffective drug therapy or adverse reactions, significant side effects, drug allergies, and contra-indicated medication and reports to supervisor.

Advises and consults with family on client’s potential to meet goals.

Observes, and records activities and findings in the clinical record and reporting to the physician the client's reaction to treatment and any changes in the client's condition.

Instructing other health team personnel including, the appropriate, home health aide and family members in certain phases of physical therapy with which they may work with the client.

Participates with staff, client, and physician in discharge activities and assists the Physical Therapist in completing the Physical Therapy discharge summary within the designated frame work of the Agency policies.

Communicates effectively with all those providing care.

Under the supervision of the Physical Therapist, assists in evaluation and development of the rehabilitative plan of care and in periodic re-evaluation as indicated.

As directed, performs routine strengthening and therapeutic exercises under the direction and supervision of the Registered Physical Therapist.

Assists in teaching exercise programs to patient and family.

Consults with the therapist regarding the outcome of home visits and reports physical findings in written form.

Assists patient in use of self-help devices.

Attends rehabilitation department staff meetings, agency staff meetings, in-services, and case conferences as required.

Participates in QAPI activities as required.

Perform any and all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
