Job Summary 

The Field Utility Technician is responsible for locating and visually identifying underground infrastructure coax cables and fiber optic cable lines, as requested by Sunshine 811 or by management.  Additionally, this position will be cross-trained in the Field Technician duties and responsibilities and will perform those tasks as requested by management.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for monitoring and completing the daily locate work orders as received by Sunshine 811
  • Visually identifies, by marking spray paint and flags of the underground infrastructure, coax cables and fiber optic cable lines, and reports back to Sunshine 811
  • Reviews work order requests to ensure services requested are completed
  • Responsible for maintaining plant infrastructure coax cables and fiber optic cable maps
  • Uses a shovel and pick to dig up and bury cable; may be required to work in controlled environmental vaults (CEV)
  • Utilizes various electronic testing devices
  • Assists other technical personnel in the performance of their duties as needed, including cross training other plant and field personnel
  • Receives technical troubleshooting escalations from help desk technicians and provides guidance toward a resolution
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining equipment inventory to ensure equipment is on hand to complete daily responsibilities
  • Ensures that assigned company vehicle is organized, clean both inside and outside, and stocked with the necessary materials and equipment, keeps inventory of equipment and facilitates scheduled maintenance
  • Provides unparalleled customer service when diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing or upgrading customer equipment and/or service
  • Must exercise good judgment regarding use of equipment, tools and materials
  • Presents self professionally at all times

  • Performs all duties in adherence to company standards

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of field technician experience preferred
  • 2+ years of wired and/or wireless internet experience preferred
  • Experience performing preventative network maintenance and servicing cable outages
  • Basic electricity training/certification or documented equivalent work experience
  • Experience with Ubiquiti Network and Wireless Products preferred
  • CompTIA A+, A+ Network, or A+ Security certifications preferred

 

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must be able to read, write and understand English and have exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have excellent attention to detail, be well organized, have the ability to multi-task, prioritize and plan to accomplish tasks
  • Knowledge of advanced technological products available to customers
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to perform data entry into work orders or on a computer or tablet
  • Ability to work rotating holidays and participation in on-call rotation
  • Familiarity with fiber optic and coax designs and principles
  • Familiarity with OSHA and other safety regulations
  • Familiar and/or proficient in one or more of these areas: Fiber Optic, Coax, Wireless technology, CPE, Access Platforms, Transport Systems, IP Networks, VoIP technology, Monitoring and Management systems.
