Summary / Objective

The VP, Market Area Commercial Loan Officer, is responsible to generate new commercial lending business by meeting with clients, prospects, and referral sources in the market and more specifically in the Bank’s assessment area. The responsibility involves interviewing applicants to gather information regarding loan needs, assessing their financial condition, and making loan recommendations to the loan committee based on the risk levels associated with their credit.

They are also responsible for monitoring their portfolio for on-going risk, including documentation, collateral, on-going business conditions, and sources of cash flow for the loan. Responsibilities include staying in touch with the client, continually monitoring their financials, as well as the condition of the collateral by periodically doing site visits.  Update the file with the abovementioned information and keep the SVP, Team Leader Commercial Lending updated on the state of each relationship.

The incumbent will also expand the deposit relationships of their clients, expand the overall increase in new deposits for the bank, and support the goals of the Bank.

Experience & Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a lending environment
  • Extensive knowledge in financial institution’s commercial lending policies and procedures
  • Five to ten years progressively responsible experience in commercial lending with thorough understanding of credit analysis

Essential Job Functions:

  • Originate and review commercial loan requests and increase the Bank deposits focusing on the Bank’s assessment area
  • Interview business loan applicants, provide counsel and work with the credit department to underwrite loans following industry and Bank guidelines
  • Review appraisals, credit reports, background checks, reference checks, and other information as needed on loan applicants
  • Outline loan terms and conditions, and inform the borrowers of loan commitments
  • Develop and recommend new loan policies & procedures to upgrade and improve the loan services for the benefit of the commercial loan department
  • Research new legislation and regulations that may affect the financial institution’s lending policies. Ensure compliance with new rules by advising senior management and implementing appropriate changes
  • Participate in the development of marketing programs for the financial institution’s commercial lending services
  • Actively participate in local business and community activities
  • Provide regular reports to the SVP, Team Leader Commercial Lending on lending activities
  • Develop new relationships and services their existing relationships
  • Recommend proposals to expand current business for commercial real estate and C&I lending
  • Maintain knowledge of department policies and procedures through internal and external training activities
  • Monitor their current portfolio for evolving risks and issues and elevates any issues immediately to the SVP, Team Leader Commercial Lending
  • Monitor underlying business trends in industries and markets in which the Bank does business.
  • Make periodic site visits to the Borrowers and visits the collateral that support the loans.

Qualifications

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Complete understanding of lending procedures, laws, and regulations
  • Sound knowledge of loan policy, compliance, loan operations, and quality customer service
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong computer skills including word and excel
  • Attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and proven organizational skills
  • Capacity to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing demands and requirements
  • Capability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Compliance with BSA regulations and all other regulations as appropriate to the position
  • Ability to apply sound judgment to decision making

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Ability to use standard equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers
  • Must be able to work schedules that meet the needs of the Bank, which may include early morning, evening and/or weekend hours
  • Frequently local travel for bank purposes and/or on behalf of the bank (i.e. meeting with customers, networking, community/marketing events)
