Summary / Objective

The Assistant Controller works under the guidance of and assists the Controller and Chief Financial Officer in preparing and reporting financial statements conforming to principles of accounting and regulatory requirements.  This role serves as depth in the department for tasks overseen by the Accounting Supervisor and must be reliable and able to carry out tasks autonomously and collaboratively. 

Experience & Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 5+ years finance experience.  CPA license is a plus but not required.
  • Background and general knowledge of accounting principles.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Preparation of various internal financial statements and external regulatory reports.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the FDICIA controls and lead associated audits.
  • Gather data for and prepares reporting for the Borrower In Custody Program.
  • Gather data for and prepares reporting for the Federal Home Loan Bank pledged collateral.
  • Assist in the preparation of the Call Report.
  • Support for Investments transactions and associated journal entries.
  • Prepare and or review general ledger accounts.
  • Prepare and process month end accruals.
  • Depth in the preparation of the allowance for credit loss (CECL)
  • Manage operational data and maintains data accuracy and integrity.
  • Review financial data periodically to ensure fairness and completeness of the data.
  • Develop proper operational, data documentation and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Evaluate workflow processes and procedures to develop, recommend and implement procedural and system changes to increase accuracy and efficiencies.

Qualifications

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Superior knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and accounting activities.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and financial management skills and the ability to prioritize.
  • Strong numerical proficiency, good problem-solving skills and excellent use of logic.
  • Ability to motivate, develop and manage a team and establish goals for the department.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with the senior management team.
  • Ability to articulate financial concepts and requirements to non-financial audiences.
  • Moderate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in other Microsoft Office applications is required. Experience with accounting software (i.e. Oracle, Avid Pay, Blackline), is preferred.
  • Understanding of internal controls with FDICIA experience preferred but not required.
  • Understanding of and experience with the Call Report preferred but not required.
  • Compliance with BSA regulations as appropriate to the position.

Physical Demands and work Environment:

  • Ability to use standard equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers.
  • May require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
  • Sitting for longer periods of time.
  • Must be able to work schedules that meet the needs of the Bank, which may include early morning, evening and /or weekend hours.
