A Day in the Life of a Director of Facilities Management
The Director of Facilities Management oversees the maintenance, engineering, and safety operations that support the hospital’s physical environment and infrastructure. This role ensures all systems—from HVAC to life safety—operate reliably, safely, and in compliance with Joint Commission, NFPA, and CMS standards. The director leads a skilled team in preventive maintenance, construction planning, and capital project execution while managing vendor and regulatory relationships. As the organization’s Safety Officer, this leader directs emergency preparedness and environment of care programs with authority to act swiftly on safety concerns. Collaboration with hospital leadership is essential to balance operational needs, compliance, and long-term facility planning.
