JOB SUMMARY                               

The Triage Nurse contributes to Medical International’s calling by contributing to the quality of care by triaging patients through registration, taking immediate action in emergency cases, and directing patients to the correct department.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Welcome patients and inform them about how the facility functions.
  • Ensure the availability of a comfortable waiting area for patients and attendants.
  • Ensure a good flow of patients to avoid overcrowded rooms and patients standing for a long time while waiting to meet with clinical staff.
  • Bring to the attention of the Nurse Supervisor or Clinical Officer any patient with an obvious serious medical problem.
  • Provide basic first aid as required.
  • Collaborate with Data Clerks to complete patient registration forms in accordance with organizational protocols and maintain files in good condition.
  • Ensure patient data confidentiality.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean environment in the triage unit
  • Participate in patient and attendant health education as needed.
  • Other Duties:
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding code of conduct and behavior expectations. 
  • Utilize volunteers when appropriate. 
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION, LICENSES & CERTIFICICATIONS

  • Certificate in Enrolled Nursing or Certificate in Enrolled Comprehensive Nursing
  • Valid CPR and first aid certifications

 

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Minimum 6 months of experience in triage activities

Preferred:

  • Experience working with international NGOs

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITITES

Knowledge:  

  • Knowledge of triage practices and first aid
  • Knowledge of hygiene management and IPC protocol

 

Skills: 

  • Skilled in administering first aid
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A good command of written and spoken English

Abilities: 

  • Ability to treat all patients and staff with respect, without prejudice
  • Ability to provide high quality, ethical, compassionate care that places the needs of the patient first
  • Ability to maintain detailed records with high accuracy and maintain confidentiality of patient information
  • Ability to be flexible and manage stress, especially in a busy triage unit
  • Commitment to Medical Teams International Calling Statement and Core Values. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.

  • Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, steps, or ladder depending on the role.
  • Occasionally I move about inside an office to access file cabinets, office machinery, meet with colleagues, etc. 
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move heavy items 
  • Seldom to occasionally position oneself to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • If in travel status, occasional frequent traversing over rough or steep terrain in either a motor vehicle or on foot.
