Description

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Ensures the safety of every individual at the YMCA, both in and around the pool as well as the rest of the facility.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Supervise all children and adults entrusted to the care of the instructor.
  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  • Maintain records as required (attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and with the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Report 15 minutes prior to scheduled shift in proper uniform (trunks/suit, YMCA provided Swim Instructor shirt).
  • Notify supervisor of before securing a substitute if you cannot fulfill your shift and provide lesson plan for substitute. It is the responsibility of the staff to get the shift

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid. YMCA or Red Cross Swim Instructor or Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.
  •  Complete Child Abuse Prevention training annually; Required to report any suspected cases of child abuse immediately to supervisor.
