Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor (SI) position provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. This helps the Y in fulfilling its mission as the leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons, to increase skill and safety in and around water. The SI will also build strong lasting relationships with members, employees, and volunteers that will build healthy lifestyles. The SI must possess good organizational, communication and team building skills.Â

Areas of Responsibility:
- Ensures the safety of every individual at the YMCA, both in and around the pool as well as the rest of the facility.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Supervise all children and adults entrusted to the care of the instructor.
- Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Maintain records as required (attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; help them connect with each other and with the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refer students and parents to other programs.
- Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Report 15 minutes prior to scheduled shift in proper uniform (trunks/suit, YMCA provided Swim Instructor shirt).
- Notify supervisor of before securing a substitute if you cannot fulfill your shift and provide lesson plan for substitute. It is the responsibility of the staff to get the shift
