POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area, standing at water’s edge or in an elevated chair with clear visibility of entire pool area.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  3. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  4. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed; report to Supervisor in writing any problems.
  5. Checks the pool and deck for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  6. Inspect locker rooms before and after shift.
  7. Arrange for qualified substitute if needed and notify supervisor.
  8. Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  9. Maintains positive relations with members, participants and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  10. Supports The Y’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards (HEPA), encouraging children, adults and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle and role-models the standards.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age requirement – 16 years of age.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification. 
  3. Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification prior to employment.
  4. Oxygen Administration certification
  5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  6. Complete YMCA of the USA New Employee Orientation e-learning course.
