The Nurse Director assumes administrative and clinical responsibilities necessary for the operation of (1) one or more assigned patient care units on a 24-hour basis. Assumes responsibility of House Supervisor on a rotating basis. He/She organizes, directs, prescribes, and delegates the delivery of nursing care; interprets and implements operational policies and procedures; coordinates unit services with other nursing areas and hospital services to achieve effective patient care; assesses, identifies, and evaluates needs of assigned units; prepares and administers budget; assures environmental control and materials management.
Considerable judgement, motivation, and creativity are required to manage assigned patient areas, and to interact with nursing staff, physicians, and patients to assure effective patient care. Work also involves observing the work staff members to evaluate their job performance and to ensure an acceptable standard of all clinical care.
Nurse Director also initiates staff meetings to discuss unit operations. Performance is evaluated through observation, conferences, and reports as to performance on the job and the overall effectiveness of clinical care on the assigned areas of responsibilities. Ages of patients normally served are neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
Nurse Director if expected to serve as a teacher, mentor, and role model to staff at all times.
