Job Summary
This position requires extensive knowledge of city ordinances. The employee in this classification will be responsible for citing and enforcing all city ordinances for which the Ordinance Department is charged with enforcing. The employees of the City are required to serve citizens and customers in a tactful, courteous manner; establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, directors, elected officials, and the general public.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Issues tickets for ordinance violations;
• Tracks issued citations and tickets through software program, as well as disposition of the same
• Schedules follow-up procedures for violation issued
• Prepares records as necessary for court appearance
• Attends court proceedings as required
• Maintains vehicle, keeps it clean and reports problems with vehicle or radio
• Attends meetings as required, performs clerical duties, and any others assigned by the Building Director
• Maintains the uniform in a professional manner, is able to work with the public in a professional and courteous manner and performs good follow-up skills with the citizens


Environmental Conditions and Equipment Used
• Exposure to indoor and outdoor weather conditions as well as a moderate amount of noise
• Uses tools and equipment that are relative to the position, including computers, code and ordinance information, etc.

Qualifications

Qualifications
• Must have a High School diploma or G.E.D.; coursework in public relations, law, business administration or related field, preferred.
• Knowledge of City ordinances, related codes, laws and regulations, court procedures and practices preferred;
• Experience in building code enforcement, court procedures, public relations preferred;
• Must have an ability to interpret the written word of the ordinance and intent;
• Related training/experience greater than 6 months preferred;
• Must have an ability to work flexible hours which may include weekends;
• Must have a valid Michigan State Driver’s license and meet the driving standard requirements;
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical exam, including drug screen, civil service examination process, and background check
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality
