Description

Scope of Work:

A Bilingual Clinical Phlebotomist draws blood from patients for various medical tests, ensuring proper sample collection and handling. They also prepare patients for procedures, provide patient education, and maintain accurate records. This position reports to the Associate Director of Clinical Services. Duties include but are not limited to:

 

Essential Skills:

  • Manual Dexterity and Physical Stamina: Required for performing venipuncture procedures and standing for extended periods. 
  • Attention to Detail and Accuracy: Essential for proper sample collection, labeling, and record keeping. 
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Necessary for interacting with patients and healthcare providers in either English or Spanish. 
  • Compassion and Empathy: Crucial for providing a comfortable and reassuring experience for patients. 
  • Organizational Skills: Needed to manage tasks and maintain an organized work environment. 
  • Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Important for addressing unexpected situations and ensuring accurate sample collection. 
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology and Laboratory Procedures: Essential for understanding and performing phlebotomy procedures. 

 

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Provides standard blood draws, POCT testing for HIV, STI and HCV.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures to collect blood samples from patients of all ages. 
  • Perform oral swab testing and processing of urine collection.
  • Explain procedures to patients, address concerns, and ensure their comfort and safety during blood draws in either English or Spanish. 
  • Properly label and handle blood samples according to established protocols, ensuring accurate tracking and delivery to the lab.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including test results and other relevant information. Adhere to strict infection control practices to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient safety. 
  • Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and other members of the healthcare team in either English or Spanish. 
  • Maintain adequate supplies of phlebotomy equipment and materials. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned, such as preparing patients for other tests, providing basic patient education, or assisting with other laboratory tasks. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification or training program completion.
  • Substantive experience and comfort providing care for and serving the LGBTQ+ community and marginalized populations.
  • Comfortable with providing care and serving communities of color, low-income communities including those experiencing homelessness, communities with IVDU, undocumented communities, etc., and in providing harm reduction services.
  • Willingness to work at community outreach events when needed.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

 

Preferred Qualifications:.

  • Flexibility and willingness to innovate - SAAF Health will be out in the community providing primary care and testing services.

 

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional clinic and office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the member will be required to drive to community outreach sites and will be required to drive to other SAAF facilities as needed.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Will work in the clinical space, and occasionally offsite with the mobile unit. 
  • Will be required to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks. 
  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and other hazards.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally required to sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; lift moderate weights (25-50 pounds).
  • Finger dexterity required.
  • Hand coordination required.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust or focus.

This job is a sedentary job, as defined by the Social Security Administration, CFR.
CFR 404.1567 Physical exertion requirements:

(c) Medium work. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.
