Camp Wokanda Manager

Duties:  Under the general supervision of the Chief Naturalist, the Wokanda Manager is responsible for:

• Selecting, training, supervising and evaluating all subordinate maintenance staff, program staff and volunteers.
• Scheduling and supervising all grounds and building maintenance and equipment maintenance throughout the park. (Including, but not limited to: grass cutting, trimming, trash removal, cleaning of equipment and facilities, and preventative maintenance.)
• Coordinating all rentals of facilities (booking reservations, billings, check-in and check-out), and providing assistance to rental groups as needed.
• Making or scheduling repairs on buildings, roadways, trails and other camp structures, and other support services including water, electricity and sewerage.
• Collecting fees from camp rentals according to Peoria Park District rental guidelines, along with any other revenue producing services as required and keeping records of all money collected and follow procedures for depositing of funds.
• Developing annual budget and tracking revenues and expenditures to keep within budget projections.
• Hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, completing payroll records, and evaluating staff and volunteers under their supervision.
• Supporting the work of the PPD Land Steward, and taking an active role in ecological restoration at Camp Wokanda. Assisting with controlled burns on PPD property.
• Maintaining trail system within Camp Wokanda and coordinating with other park managers and PPD Planning Division in maintenance of Illinois River Bluff Trail
• Keeping assigned facilities and grounds cleaned, supplied, maintained, and removed of litter to maintain the best park image.
• Answering the camp telephone and manager cell phone, and treating all patrons in a prompt, courteous and informative manner. Answering patron questions and giving help and/or directions.
• Operating chainsaws, other power tools, and riding mower or push mower equipment to mow all turf areas as assigned.
• Implementing of park district rules and regulations for employees and guests and/or reporting to appropriate officials.
• Reporting to appropriate supervisors any unsafe conditions, maintenance needs, supply shortages, unusual guest circumstances, scheduling conflicts, or out of the ordinary circumstances. Making appropriate recommendations to supervisors in terms of future projects, maintenance and operations.
• Managing ancillary revenue sources including merchandise sales and maple syrup operations.
• Making arrangements as required for groups, special events and public activities scheduled in the park.
• Maintaining equipment maintenance records for servicing, operating instructions, etc.
• Communicating and collaborating with the PPD marketing team and environmental team to further the goals and image of Camp Wokanda.
• Attending meetings and participate in leadership efforts of the Environmental and Interpretive Services Unit of the Recreation Division.
• Follows all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed.  Supports all aspects of the Park District safety program.
• Performs other duties as assigned:
  • which are reasonably related to the duties described; or
  • which need to be performed promptly to avoid safety hazards or to protect Park District property; or
  • which are not generally described in other job descriptions; or
  • when the amount of work exceeds the availability of Park District employees within the appropriate job classification.

Essential Functions:

• Ability to reach, walk, squat and bend at the waist and knees.
• Ability to operate power machinery relative to job duties.
• Ability to apply pesticides safely.
• Ability to understand and complete record keeping and paperwork relative to job duties.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Education:  A bachelor’s degree in Parks, Recreation, Resource Management, Hospitality & Tourism, or related education.  Although a degree is preferred, extensive experience in a similar position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.

Certification:  Must obtain Food Safety Manager Certification.  Must obtain a valid applicator's pesticide spray license.

Experience:  At least two years of recreation facility management with grounds and facility maintenance desirable. Experience working with the public required. Experience with maintaining building interior, and exterior, and operating grounds maintenance equipment. Experience and ability in maintenance, upkeep and troubleshooting of camp electrical, plumbing and well system. Experience with park operations in ecologically sensitive areas.

Knowledge and Ability:

• Basic knowledge of how to effectively and efficiently run a rental facility, increase revenue opportunities, and provide exceptional customer service.
• How to properly serve the public and responsibly handle situations and events as they arise.
• Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures and equipment, facility repair and conservation practices.
• Ability to accomplish assigned duties with minimal supervision, and ability to supervise staff and volunteers.
• Must have ability to properly clean all public use areas and recognize park visitor needs to insure and improve guest satisfaction.
• Ability to be professional, respectful, accountable, innovative, to follow safety procedures, and be equitable to both internal and external customers. 
• Must have a valid Illinois State driver’s license.
• Must have the ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
• Must demonstrate proficiency with chainsaw and other power tools necessary to the position, or willingness to acquire these proficiencies.
• Personal: Must have personal integrity and demonstrate reliability, initiative, tact and resourcefulness. Understand the nature of rental facility management and the hours, flexibility and commitment involved.
