Landfill Worker
JOB TITLE: Landfill Worker
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Landfill
SUPERVISOR: Landfill Manager & Landfill Supervisor
SALARY: $34,278 to $39,420 Annually
Perform a variety of labor services in support of the daily landfill operations.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the landfill active area and surrounding areas clean of litter.
- Ensure all drainage ditches and sediment ponds are clear of litter and other obstructions.
- Clean landfill equipment, including pressure washing undercarriages, and cleaning tracks and rollers.
- Install and repair litter fences, silt fences, barbed wire fencing, and netting.
- Install and maintain stormwater pollution prevention management systems as directed by the Landfill Manager.
- Maintain clen and organized the landfill buildings (administrative office, break room, restrooms) the equipment buildings, and staging areas.
- Perform work activities according to safe work practices and procedures.
- Maintain and perform Equipment Inspection Logs for various equipment used during the day.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist operators as needed with equipment.
- Mow and trim grassed areas.
- Install and maintain traffic signs.
- Direct traffic as necessary to ensure safety of customers and work crew.
- Clear sidewalks and scale house ramps from snow and ice.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Basic understanding of landfill operations.
- Hazardous waste/materials recognition.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
- Ability to follow directions closely with minimal oversight.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work on an established rotating schedule during holiday periods.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
High school diploma or GED
Preferred:
Experience in construction site environment and entry level clerical/computer skills.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Wear designated PPE when required- hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe 6-inch lace up boots, safety glasses, and gloves. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Field environment; exposure to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, infectious materials, and inclement weather conditions; work around vehicles and heavy construction equipment
