POSITION SUMMARY
This is technical para-professional engineering work, which is performed in the field or office. Work involves the performance of para-professional engineering assignments which include drafting and design, mapping and GIS, field survey work, and field inspection of various capital, maintenance and development projects. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of the Assistant City Engineer and is normally checked for technical accuracy and for adherence to standards upon completion, and through reports prepared.
This position is a full time on-site position reporting to the City of Batavia's Public Works building.
A typical work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00AM-4:00PM.
Hiring Salary Range: $79,112 - $97,078 DOQ
Full salary range: $79,112 - $109,084
Pay grade 13 on the City of Batavia's 2025 wage and salary ordinance non exempt with excellent benefits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with the development of plans, contracts, specifications for capital and maintenance improvement projects.
Performs field inspection and customer service for public infrastructure and development projects to ensure compliance with contract documents and City standards.
Prepares engineering details, design drawings, and exhibits for infrastructure maintenance and improvement projects utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS software with the assistance of staff engineers.
Performs engineering field layout for capital and maintenance improvement projects.
Responsible for oversight and inspection of sediment and erosion control devices for public improvement projects and private development projects in compliance with the City’s NPDES Permit and stormwater management plans.
Performs right-of-way permit and plan reviews for utility projects, grading, site work, and other improvements on private property.
Performs various field surveys to collect data for design and construction purposes.
Performs inspections of drainage issues and develops recommended improvements.
Attends meetings with residents, contractors and developers on engineering related matters.
Responds to inquiries from the public, investigates complaints and suggests corrective measures as needed for resolution; addresses issues related to construction activities; and provides updates on ongoing and planned projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a technical school and/or completion of an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Surveying or related field; three (3) to five (5) years of previous field engineering/construction experience along with experience in surveying, drafting, public works inspection, GIS mapping, or other related work; OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of the various types of design standards and procedures used in the design and construction of public works and public improvement projects.
Knowledge of land survey techniques and instruments.
Experience in using engineering tools including measuring devices such as tapes, wheels, box levels and optical levels/transits.
Knowledge of public works construction methods and materials.
Knowledge of engineering maps, documents, and records, and of property records, plats and descriptions.
Ability to be well organized, work in a fast-paced environment and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
Experience with AutoCAD Civil3D, Geographic Information Systems, Asset Management software is highly desired.
Skill in the use and care of engineering survey instruments.
Ability to perform precise topographic and location survey work.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the general public, even in adverse situations, and to convey concise and accurate information.
Ability to perform work in a safe manner, follow safe work procedures, and take necessary safety precautions.
Ability and willingness to attend short courses, college courses, and seminars for continuing education.

At times, this position may work outside. While outdoors, the employee occasionally works in inclement weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office to moderate outside.
