JOB SUMMARY:


Miami Country Day School is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Summer Basketball Camp Counselor. This role focuses on teaching the fundamentals of basketball to campers while creating a positive, engaging, and safe environment. The Camp Counselor will lead groups of young athletes, fostering skill development, teamwork, and confidence on and off the court. In addition to providing high-quality instruction, the counselor is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of each participant, while helping them build self-esteem and a strong sense of accomplishment through the sport.

 

ESSENTIAL TASKS & DUTIES:

 

  • Greets and communicates with parents and participants. Must be able to engage and build genuine relationships with parents/participants and make all feel welcome
  • Ensures a safe and risk-free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants
  • Serves a role model to campers of all ages at all times
  • Exhibits good judgment, enthusiasm for the activities and a strong awareness of safety
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the sport’s structure, rules, and regulations
  • Ensures all campers participate in all activities
  • Organizes small-sided basketball games and activities
  • Responsible for daily inventory of equipment
  • Responsible for setting up and taking down basketball field and equipment daily
  • Responsible for understanding ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program
  • Responsible for enforcing and following all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas
  • Record all accident/incident reports and notify the nurse and Director of Basketball Camp immediately
  • Knowing where all campers are at all times by managing small and large groups, utilizing the buddy system and frequent head counts to ensure each camper is safe and well behaved
  • Monitors campers at all times including the swimming pool, inside the gym, and at lunch in the cafeteria
  • Arrives to shift on time and record hours worked honestly and accurately
  • Communicate with parents and address parents’ concerns in a timely manner. Seek the help of the Basketball Director when necessary
  • Must wear appropriate Basketball attire

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • College degree preferred
  • 5 years of camp experience/activity leadership – comprised of experience as a camper or a CIT, minimum 1-year experience as a Camp Counselor
  • Must work well with varying age groups of children
  • Exhibited leadership skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Additional language skill is a bonus
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Basic office administration, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools
  • Able to work with multiple age-groups and in different environments (indoor, outdoor
  • While performing this role, this employee may be required to lift up to 30 lbs. move around with full use of limbs and use all five senses to complete his/her responsibilities.
  • May work long hours for extended periods of time.
  • Works in varied and extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

  • 8-week season contract (June 2nd - July 25th)
  • Monday through Friday (8:30am - 3:30pm w/30 minute lunch)
  • Uniform is required daily (except when noted otherwise)
  • Personal use of technology (including smartphones, tablets, personal computers) is restricted during work hours (unless on a personal break, away from parents and campers)
