Sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, computer numerical control (CNC)
machines, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining center to fabricate
metallic and nonmetallic parts; responsible for any and all layouts, machining,
dismantling, drawing, fitting or assembly work necessary to manufacture or repair parts
for using production or plant maintenance by performing the following duties.
Plans necessary working procedures.
Lays out the stock for work and performs layout work for other maintenance personnel.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or metal
stock surfaces, using measuring and marking devices (such as calibrated ruler,
micrometer, caliper and scriber) as guides for subsequent machining.
Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories,
and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jog borers, grinders, and shapers, and
grinds all types and styles of tool bits, blades, etc.
Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant
flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit
computerized machine control media.
Starts and observes machine and equipment operation and listens to detect
malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, determines the need for
adjustments/repairs, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
Makes special jigs, fixtures, or attachments, whenever necessary or as instructed.
Verifies conformance of finished work-piece to specification using precision measuring
Alternates/rotates from machine to machine, fit up to assembly, or job to job.
Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or
programmed control data.
Sets up and operates variety of machine tools and fits/assembles parts to fabricate or
repair machine tools and maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of
mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.
Operates any type or size of machine tool to allow minimum time for metal removal,
accuracy of dimensions, and required finish while meeting all accuracy requirements
such as running, drive or shrink fits, and any type of finish required in the job
specifications.
Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly using jigs, fixtures, surface plate,
surface table, hand tools and power tools.
Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as
micrometers, height gauges and gauge blocks.
Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and
tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
Repairs machine tools and keeps them clean and well lubricated.
Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts and polishing lathe to polish tube mill
rolls.
Determines type and dimension of metal stock required by studying blueprints, sketches,
machine parts or specifications.
Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve
machining or production problems.
Performs any dismantling or assembly work necessary to either fit parts, align or
complete assembly equipment in the shop or field.
Operates grinding machine to grind flat and convex surfaces of tube mill rolls, cut off
jaws, shafts, interior and exterior surfaces of bearings, etc.
Produces new or replacement parts, which may or may not have blueprints, that is
required to maintain or improve plant operations, in a timely manner.
Fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying the ability of materials
and layout techniques.
instruments.
Directs machinist apprentice in performing required work.
Other duties as assigned by management.
