SUMMARY

Engages in surveying earth's surface to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction, mapmaking, land division, titles, or other purposes by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs duties to assist in daily operation of survey department.

Takes direction from Project Manager or Director.

Leads day-to-day work activities of survey party. Directs instrument person in specific assignments related to project.

Responsible for record research. Performs examination of prior survey evidence, maps, deeds, and grantee/grantor indices to obtain data needed for surveys.

Determines methods and procedures for establishing or reestablishing survey control. Supervises field crew members in data collection and record/note keeping. Keeps accurate records and sketches to describe work performed.

Performs computations pertaining to traverse closures, boundary lines, construction staking and photogrammetric control.

Coordinates findings and keeps Supervisor up to date on project status.

Performs projects according to project scope and within time frames specified by Supervisor.

Educates and communicates with subordinate crew members to foster team approach on projects.

From time to time assists in instrument persons' duties.

Knowledge of advanced surveying principles (mathematical and legal) should increase with level of experience at this position along with ability to identify and add essential elements necessary for completion of the project.

Familiar with most aspects and working knowledge of survey technologies associated with survey operations including equipment and software. Equipment includes robotic total stations, global positioning system (GPS), data collectors, scanners and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Software includes AutoCAD, coordinate geometry programs, Windows, Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, Internet access.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three (3) or more years surveying experience; or equivalent combination of higher education and experience. Proficiency in use of current BL platforms of AutoCAD (Civil3D), Word and Excel.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, construction documents (plan sets), operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively to clients or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Land Surveyor in Training certificate preferred. Current driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, and may encounter cold, heat, wet and/or humid conditions. Ambulation in challenging terrain and in environments subject to heavy traffic, odors, dust, mud, water, frozen ground, demolition debris, steep grades, heavy vegetation, high locations, etc. is expected. The employee will sometimes encounter poisonous plants, mosquitoes, ticks, stinging insects, snakes and other wildlife.

Safety equipment consisting of steel toe work boots, water repellent boots, hard hat, reflectorized vests, eye protection etc. is required to be utilized and is the responsibility of the employee to utilize in field environments involving construction, roadway or railroad traffic and other situations.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Position may require travel.

CREW CHIEF: Responsible for running a one or two-person survey crew.

  • CAD, GPS, & Robotic knowledge desirable
  • 5+ years experience in Boundary/Topographic/Route Surveying, Construction Stakeout and ALTA surveys
  • Comfort and Experience with data collection technology
  • Experience with construction layout for commercial/residential sites as well as layout for oil and gas preferred
  • Experience managing survey crew preferred
  • Experience in land records research, both on site and online
  • Must be motivated individual seeking involvement in all survey operation
  • Ability for local travel 25-50% of the time, with occasional overnight.

Required Experience:

  • 4+ years experience in Boundary Surveying, Construction Stakeout and ALTA surveys
  • Ability to travel 25-50% of the time, with occasional overnight.
